USA Intro and 1989 Deluxe Question

Hi Everyone....

Well, I have just registered and Im excited to start learning about my newer (used) toyota that has just replaced my 1986 Ford Ranger. Im not expecting any problems but you know how that goes!! :-)

Anyway, Im buying a 1989 Extended Cab Deluxe Pickup (4x4, AC, 5-Speed Manual, 125K). It seems to be in great shape with the exception of a sqeaky spedo cable so far. I was wondering if you all could field some questions for me?

1. Should I be worried abou the timing chain on this beast? From a few posts that I have read, it may become a problem.

2. How hard will it be to replace or lube that spedo cable? I suppose the problem might be with the gauge since the sqeak is up high?

3. Anything I should look for that may be a 'common' problem? I live in a rust 'free' area (Laramie, WY) so I have no rust issues that I can tell.

thanks for any info you may have for this newbie!!!!

Hey welcome to TN. Timing chain so im assuming u have a 22R/R-E? You might want to check it out just for cares sake, but if the guy was a anal owner and the truck is cherry then i dont think u have to worry for a while. 89-91 have mechanical speedos so i cant help u there. Lastly common probs hmmm does your rpm drop when u press the brakes? then only other problem i can see is leaving it stock Good luck man and take care of that beast oh yeah your lucky u dont have to worry about rust!!

Thanks for the advice. I just went and picked up the truck today. My short shopping list for now is...

1. Bedliner - Im going to be doing lots of trips to the dump
2. Fluid change - Engine, Tranny, Differential, does this thing have grease fittings?
3. Service Manual - Hopefully a used factory manual off ebay.
4. Timing Chain Test - From another post Im going to do the slack measurement using the distributor rotor.
5. Tires - Wooo Hooo, the tires from my old Ranger are the same size.

Now that I have my Toyota, I can pull my dead Ranger to the shop.

Sounds like the Spedo 'Squeak' might just be a lube requirement, I still have to pull the instrument panel tho I guess.

My '89 has rust under the factory bed liner. That's the only place with rust. I wouldn't suggest a drop in bed liner for this reason.

As for the speedo cable, it took me around 1.5 hours to replace mine. I think you have to disconnect the parking brake cable somewhere so you can route it through the new mount on the new speedo cable but I didn't know where/how to do it. I just pulled out the trusty Dremel and cut a little section off the new mounting plate so the parking brake cable can just slide through and that solved the problem.

My plans are to get a York Load Lok Over-the-Rail bed liner as I hoped that would help prevent moisture from getting under the bedliner. Not sure if that will help really, just a theory.

thanks for the info on the spedo cable. In searching the forums there doesn't really appear to be any discussion on that topic at all so I will be sure to post my results here when I am done too for the archives. After listening to the noise and location, Im actually wondering if the problem is with the instrument cluster and not the cable itself as it really sounds like plastic on plastic rubbing and only happens above 5 MPH. The spedomether also 'pulses' along with the sound so Im doubting that the issue is now with the cable??????

This might be a little late in replying since the last post was on 10/02/05. I just registerd today.

As far as a bedliner, I just bought some Herculiner. It's a roll on bed liner you do yourself. Sort of like Rhino or Line-X but knowhere near as expensive. For $80 (eBay), there will never be a moisture problem and should last longer than the truck itself.

that stuff sucks if you do it yourself you need alot of the material to get it to compare with a rhino or line x. it took me 4 gallons to get it as thick as theirs.

Really??????

Personally I never had any vehicles done with Rhino or Line-X (and I dont expect Herculiner to be better than those brands), but as far as Herculiner doing it's job, it does it well. A guy at work did his F-150 and it looks great. I've seen him hauling things from Washers and dryers to crushed stone and sand (and lots of other things ib between). The Herculiner is holding up well.

At this point, I will stick with the Herculiner mainly because of the cost savings alone. I'll post pics as soon as I get it done.
