'87 4wd pickup rear brake clunk

I have an '87 4wd long bed pickup. It runs great, but it has developed a noise in the rear brakes (I think that it is in the brakes). When coming to a stop, the is a pronounce "click" noise as though the brake shoes are rocking into position. If I go in reverse, the noise happens again, then again if I go foward. The noise does not occur if I go foward, hit the brakes and make the noise, then immediately go forward again and apply the brakes. The noise does happen if I have been travelling foward for awhile since last braking, and I hit the brakes again.

Has anyone run into this b-4? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Could it be your drive shaft U joints? If you have an automatic, with your foot on the brake and shifting from forward to reverse, do you hear it?
