84 Pickup Problems

Here's the scoop. I've inherited an 84 Pickup that Ill be using as my daily driver if I can ever get all the problems fixed. The truck has been sitting around with very little use for the last six years. It made a 1000 mile trip from Georgia to Illinois with no problems, but now that its here in town, its had some issues. The truck now has 89,000 miles.

The main two problems that it has are: hesitation when accelerating and a rough idle that likes to die. The truck doesnt always do this, but it seems like its about 50% of the time. Most of the time, Ill start the truck and let it sit after revving the engine a couple of times. When it's idling rough, I can give the engine a little bit of gas and often the truck will start to sputter or sputter and die. It does this a lot sitting at stop signs as well. The hesitation often comes into play when Im slowing for a turn and hit the accelerator, the truck will hesitate for a half-second.

So, these have been problems for the last month. The following have been replaced with little to no improvement:

1. Spark plugs and wires
2. Accelerator pump
3. Muffler
4. Engine belt

The dealership, which I will never go to again, also said that the carbuerator is dirty and needs rebuilt and the EGR valve needs to be replaced. I dont know anything about the inside of a truck. Can someone say whether these two things can cause these problems?

If you smell excess gasoline, you need to make sure that the choke is opening ALL THE WAY. Dirt/oil can make the choke stick partially closed causing a poor running engine. A toothbrush and a couple cans of carb cleaner can clean this. Hint: Use a flashlight and shine it on the backside of the carb. Lookat at all the nooks and crannies where dirt can hide.

A sticky EGR valve would make your truck run rough, idle poorly and some hesitation during acceleration. Didn't the dealership clean the carb when they install the accelerator pump? If the Chock stick you'll also have similar problem, only difference is, your truck will blow lotsa black smoke.

The hesitation problem you have is due to the carbuerator. There was a bullitin on this back in about 1985 and if you are lucky you might find the part number for this jet to fix the problem. If not, you could install a carb from a newer engine, 86 and up and this shoud help. Also chec the little vacuum swithching valves on the passenger side fender with small vacuum hoses going to them. Disconnect and plug each one with a golf tee and drive it and see if this helps.....if so , just leave the appropiate one plugged. Hope this helps!
