Gear Ratios - 1988 Pickup

I own a 1988 Toyota pickup with 23 ER motor. The rear end blew out and I need a ring and pinion set but since I don't want to spend much money I located a 1986 Toyota pickup with the same motor 2 wheel drive for free. What are the chances the gear ratios in the rear are the same?

check the tire sizes, my 86 2wd is geared pretty slow (numerically high) with 14 in wheels, is yours a 4x4? otherwise VIN # at dealer ship might be able to find out

Check the VIN tag under the hood; it'll tell you all you need to know. Something like "axl/trans" etc. Match up the numbers that fall under the "axle" part of the tag, such as "G292" which means a 8" 4:10 2-pinion open diff or "G254" which indicates a 8" 4.56 4-pinion diff. There's a wide range of gearing, my trucks range from 3.07:1 to 4.88:1.

If your ring and pinion blew, you'd be better off to get a third member instead of just the gears. That way you don't have to pay to have it set up.

if all else fails, count the # of teeth on the ring and on the pinion. ring / pinion = ratio
