ok this is something ive been needing to get opinions abvout for a long time ago and need to ASAP
fuel guage is always on E never moves or anything ever no matter what
fuel warnign light will come on when fuel gets real low however
how do i find out if its guage or sending unit dead ? which ?
is there a fuse just for fuel only ??
how to test wires at sender unit ? have a flatbed, so i can get to whatever pretty easily
87 ext cab 2wd pickup, 22RE and auto overdrive
any idea how many gallons tank on this thing either ?
thanks for anything

There should be a 3-prong connector coming off the gas tank. Using a meter set to DC voltage, from terminal 1 to ground should be about 4.5 volts going back to cluster. If you remove the cluster, you should have about 55 ohms of resistance between terminals 1 & 2 for the guage (metal bolts on back of cluster).
Reading into the tank from the 3-prong connector between terminals 1 & 3 you should get:
Full = 3 ohms +/- 3
1/2 = 32.5 ohms +/- 4.8
Empty = 110 ohms +/- 7.7
The fuel level warning light (if equipped) comes off terminal 1 & 2 of the 3-prong connector. If you disconnect the connector and turn the key ON, low level should light up.

what would you say is wrong if it read E all the time
?
leave connector plugged together for testing ?
theres two wire connector,
blue wire and white wire
toyotas arent variable ground output fuel units ?
one wire is ground connected at unit ?
hum..
is ground sent through system or is hot ? which is metered ?
shouldnt a test be for resistance through the unit ?
how does all this work ?
i get 9/10 of an ohm of resistance no matter if i test across wires with unplugged, or if i go with blue and metal of truck
white is attached to tab metal on sender
tanks is around half full i know
thanks

There should be a 2 wire connector and a 3 wire connector.
The 2 wire should be for the fuel pump.
The 3 wire connctor is for the fuel sender and fuel level. Take the readings with connector unplugged. Not sure which is #1 and #3 but there are only 3 wires. For the resistance reading of the sender, it does not matter.

hum this is complicated
i really dunno what to test then
hum
and have no fuel guage
wish could know what was wrong without having to figure out what to test exactly,,
damn toyotos,, isnt just one simple wire like on other makes,,
humm.
same with taillight and brake wires, there 5 of them! i think 6 on one side!
that was fun alone, wiring up lights, has to be a single bulb for every function or turn signals wont work..
just crazy,,
thanks

I have been having troubles with my gauge/sending unit....however it is not always stuck on 'E', it moves sometimes....
Anyway, to check to see if it was my gauge causing problems, I found the 3-wire plug going to the sending unit\fuel lever. Unplugged it and then grounded each wire individually with the key turned on. One wire grounded will give you the "low fuel" light and the other wire grounded will cause the gauge to move up. For mine, as soon as I grounded the one wire, the guage moved up all the way full. So I think my gauge is okay...
I would try what I did and ground each wire individually until you find the one for the gauge. I don't remember the color of the wire and I don't have my shop manual to check.
its actually below E, all the time constantly, key on or off dont matter never moves, is dead
im gonna pull the unit after a bit here, i hope the float fell off
thanks

ok pulled it out and its rusted so bad the float arm was frozen in place i had to bust it free to pull it out of tank it was atl east halfway position if not higher,
its still dead
anyone got a good used unit ? i need one.,,,,
for 87 22RE 2wd pickup.,.,
or is this some rare item ill never find ?
is this the end of the line for the truck do i have to junk it now ? if i cant find a unit then ill have to, cant be driving around like this,,
thanks

not for 55+ bucks im not,, screw all that, truck isnt even hardly worth 55 to me, although i could take it to scrap and get a good 100 or 120 out of it, plus parts, in which is starting to sounds really good at this point since freaking toyota truck parts are either impossible to find are are too much $$
someone has to be parting one out somewhere ?!
hum
thanks

on the main chassis side of the plug theres three wires coming from it:
there is
yellow with red stripe
yellow with blue stripe
and tan/brown(matches with the white wire on the sender unit side of the plug)
yellow with red stripe makes the guage go all the way to full when i ground it
yellow with blue does nothing to the guage when i ground it
same with the tan/brown one, nothing happens when grounded
next i measured resistance between 1 and 3 wires on the sender unit plug thats the red striped yellow and the white wires
cant get anything out of those two cept zero reading, no change on the ohmmeter
also nothing betwen any of the three wires except for 1.9 between the blue striped yellow and the white wires
all the other combos are dead, nothing
the tank is around half full
what do you think?
sounds liek my guage works,
and have another bad sender unit ??
thanks.
