Alternator Removal in an 86 Pickup

I'm trying to replace an old Alternator on my 1986 Toyota Pickup (Long bed with 22-R Engine). The problem is, the space is so small and compact in size I am having trouble bringing it out through the top or the bottom. I've got radiator pipes in the way on top and bottom. I've had to remove the splash guard from the underside of the truck just to get to it.

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.

Whether your starter uses two rectangular types or one rectangular and one crescent you can substitute with two squares or one square and one crescent so any of the above part #'s for those kits will be the right ones,or about half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages would sell aftermarket contacts for only $5 each or the pair.

when I did My pick up I had to lift it straight up.u need smal hands tho.just have to keep fiddling with it bro

I have since gotten it replaced. Now I just need to replace the fuel filter.

fuel filter... right now i am letting you know is a bitch. it took me about two hours just to get it off, not including the hour just to find the damn thing, but in the end it was a huge bonus.

NOTE: under the starter, acess from the passenger wheel well.

Re: Alternator replacement. I had to remove the top radiator hose and move aside the power steering hose, and yes it is a tight sqeeze. Other then that it's an easy fix!

I think you are thinking of the 22RE, sonofmayhem, which is a bitch for the fuel filter, the 22R however is a breeze, its back by the tank- five minute job
