As you can see, when the grill is off the intake is exposed, so I had to cut the grill to get a direct flow of air to the intake. I went ahead and sprayed some black spraypaint there to mke it even harder to notice. From the factory, where the intake is open, there is a flap that blocks air from the grill, making air only acessable from under the truck. I left the stock air hoses, mass air flow sensor, and air box where they are, and put in a square k&n for better air flow through the box. At first, I was worried about water getting through the hose and into the engnie, but while I was putting in the new filter I realized that there is a small hole on the bottom of the air box, and the intake comes in under the filter. I grabbed a hose to test, and found that any water that goes in, comes out under the filter, and leaks out through the hole in the box.
The mod isnt hard and if you dont care about looks, is free. While I was doing this, I re-painted my grill so it cost me $10 for spray paint, clear coat, and sand paper. The cuts were done with an average dremel tool and bit.
Warning: I drive a rwd truck that never goes off road, so I dont worry about anything but dust, water, and the occasional bug getting through my grill. For all you with 4x4 trucks that go off road, you might want to consider making that hole a little bigger for mud, and getting some chicken wire and slim zip ties so you can drill some small holes around the intake in the grill to zip tie the chicken wire to so you can catch bigger peices of debris.
If anyvody tries this, tell us how it worked out.
