little 87 pickup blown head gasket (milky oil)

hey guys i have this little 87 pickup (toyota) and im about to change the headgasket on it, it blew and i have milky oil, i didnt know what other type of flush i needed to fix this to have NO water in my oil when im done

i have changed the head gaskets on my 3.8 thunderbird so im very familiar w/ it all however i just had a blown gasket, i have a good idea to believe this head on the yota is cracked so i will be buying a new one

what i had planned to do was tear down, replace and clean off things and re-assemble in reverse order then drain the rest of the oil, fill it up w/ some cheapo oil and run it for about 15 minutes and then drain all that oil out fill it up and roll

??? is it worth it or do you think the water in the motor has affected my bearings etc...

what type of motor is in this car and would it be smarter just to pick one up

is it RE22? or something

Well, it's unfortunate, but sounds like you're familiar, so I think you'll do fine.

Here's what I know from when it happened to me on my '89 Mazda B2200.......

#1.) After you have a new head on (if you do junkyard make sure they magnaflux it to check for cracks........you don't want to do it twice) and new headgasket you'll want to do exactly like you said & run it thru with cheap oil (unless you fee like tossn' good oil in there) and let it heat up & drain it. If it's really bad when it comes out, you might even wanna do it again. $20 will go a looong way in this regard.

#2.) You will probably also want to check your cooling system. If you've got a local radiator place around they have power-flush systems that do a great job of cleaning oil out of your radiator........(I had this done on my '89 mazda and they had to do it TWICE to get all the oil out). It's worth doing, imho!

#3.) After that, just keep checking your oil's dipstick and your radiator cap for water in oil and oil in water so you're well aware of how things are cleaning up!! After a good month or so of checking, go ahead & change the oil early one last time & you should be good after that!

On a related note------------> I remember that when this happened to my '89 mazda I was rather surprised......(the wife was driving, but still).........at how suddenly it all happened. One day I had a great running truck and in a second, the headgasket blew, cracked my head and I was suddenly doing a top end job.

Any way to tell how/why/when a head gasket is gonna go?? REason I ask is that I love playin' w/ my new (to me) '94 Toy and wouldn't want the same thing to happen to it.......(though I'm already on top of the cooling system like a hawk)

OH and if ANYBODY has change the belts on their 22RE, I'd love to hear some advice for gettin' it off the A/C 'cuz Haynes SUCKS for help on this!!!!!! TIA

Just a heads up. Make sure that it is just a cracked head and not a cracked block. Been there done that.

Are you sure it is the head gasket? Sometimes on 22r's the timing chain wears through the ft cover and water gets in the oil.

i had the water in the oil mostly but barely any oil in my cooling system. the weird thing is how the dang thing would spilt out gas smelling fumes kinda like the exhaust was leaking into the cooling system and vice versa. it had some coolant comming out of the exhaust also and when it died it would start but it took alot of cranking over. well after i tore the engine down completely i inspected the head gasket and took the head to get preassure tested it was good. the head gasket had no signs of being blown either. i had the block re done and magna fluxed at the machine shop and everything checks out fine. the timing chain did not wear through the cover. i still think it was comming from the timing cover somehow. it looked to be ok but i think that it could have been one of the gaskets that seperate the cooling system from the crank case. if that gasket is not put on properly behind that timing cover it could act similar to a blown head gasket in my theory. my question is how the heck did the radiator spit out exhaust fumes if everything is not cracked and checks out? do you guys think that maby the rings were letting the gasses blow by and leaking through the timing cover into the rad? it still puzzles me and i know its hard to pinpoint but it still drives me nuts. at any rate i have a brand new head and the block is ready for the engine builder kit to arrive... sucks having to wait for ups to get from the north west coast to the south east coast. so hopefully ill get her done this week sometime and when the franken yota fires up ill say..... "ITS ALIIIIIIVE!!!" by the way its a 94 22re but i thought you guys might want to know about the situation and mayby have insight.
