1980 4x4 pickup compatible with 83 pickup?

i recently picked up a 1980 toyota 4x4 parts truck and was wondering if the fenders, running gear ect.. were compatible with my 83 4x4. and also did they make a 83 sr5 pickup and if so whats the difference?

Well, I don't know everything, but the '79 to '83 are basicly the same truck. The 79 and 80 have the 20r engine and only have the 4 spd. The 81 to 83 have the 22r and either the 4spd or 5spd. The 5spd tranny will bolt up to the 20r engine. I have an 81 4x4 and had a 20r from a 79 in it for a while and used the stock 81 5 spd. The grills I believe are different. They are interchangeable, but are different. The 79 to 81 have round headlight and the 82 and 83 have square lights. The driveshafts are the same as long as they are from the same bed length trucks. The axles are the same. Transfer cases should be the same, but I am not sure. They should be interchangeable. Brakes are interchangeable. All the body pieces are the same. If you are looking for any parts, shoot me an email, I am parting out my '81.

Also, yes they did make an SR5 in '83. The SR5's have better trim and some different graphics.

I think that the drivetrain would be compatable, but I think the body was different.
Wasnt the '80 more of the "Hilux" body with the round headlights and external bed tiedowns?

Now that you mention it Captain, there were two different beds available, the HiLux styled ones have been the most common ones I have seen. My '81 is a HiLux style. It has a locking gas door and external bed hooks. The other beds don't have the locking gas door and have internal hooks. The canadian models and the austrialian models I believe are also a bit different, but I am not 100% on that.

I thought that the 79-83 had the same body style with the hooks on the outside of the bed. When they redesigned the body in 1984 the 4x4 had interior hooks in the bed and the 4x2 had the external hooks and a bed like the 79-83. Almost everything is interchangable except for a few interior changes to the heater controls and the headlights/grill.

82toyo, you are correct. I made a phone call to my buddy (local toyota guru) and I was mistaken. The 79-83 do only have one bed style, with the external hooks. The two different beds were on 84 thru we believe 87 or 88.

The gear ratios and front axle tube gusseting may be different. The 1983 has a more sturdy front axle....or is it the '83-'85 model? Toyota has 3 different gusset designs supporting the front axle tubes from the late 1970's to the mid 1980's. The later the better. A quick look at the front axle tubes will show the difference.

The 1980 pickups have a 3.90 gear, which was a one year orphan, as Toyota bowed to EPA pressure.

yup

The 82 style has a 4/11 gear ratio, the 84 style has a 4/10. The engine will bolt right up to the tranny. Thats actually what i did 4 or 5 days ago. The grills are different but the one of the 82 was in 5 pieces so i dont know if it fit or not. On the 82 the cowl beneath the windsheild is a solid part of the truck, on the 84 is removable. The 82 also has a 4 speed... Other than than that the vacuum setup is different and so is the wiring... If putting an 82 engine in an 84 remove all wiring harnesses from the 82 except the carb. And put them on the 82, most should fit.
