Cabin air filter air flow direction?

The first time I changed this I thought I put the replacement in the same way as the original which was air flowing from top to bottom. Today I changed it again and two things made me wonder about the air flow direction. The bottom side was dirtier than the top and the fan is directly underneath. The instructions that came with the Purolator filter show the arrow pointing up but it really say that's the airflow direction.

Anyone know for sure what direction the air flows? I have a 2004 Highlander V6.

The flow is definitely top to bottom. I can't imagine why yours was dirty underneath...unless somebody sneaked into your car and flipped the filter...not likely, unless there's a practical joker in your midst.

I'm sure you are right. There's no way I would have installed the replacement upside down when I replaced the OE filter the first time. On my Camry, there is small debris on the top which has to come from outside the car which also implies top to bottom airflow. Thanks.
