USA LEDs for backup reverse lights?

Recently purchased (and returned) WHITE 7440 7443 15-LED BACK UP REVERSE LIGHT BULBS but they were bloody awful being 40% less coverage and at not even close to brightness of stock bulbs.

Anyone used or know if these Putco PURE Premium 1157 LED Bulbs would be useful in producing more light/coverage than the 05 Highlander stock reverse backup lights? The stock seem to be almost useless. Thanks.

Any SUV with rear privacy glass is gonna have a problem with rearward lighting. I doubt that you're gonna find anything that is a SUBSTANTIAL improvement. How about this link? These aren't the ones you returned, are they? http://www.carid.com/2001-toyota-hig...ts-102925.html

The best thing you can do is put a led light bar. They have several you can attach to the license plate and work miracles. I will see if I can find a link.

The 7440 is the same # as the useless one(s) I mentioned. Though your 7440 picture wise appears to be identical to the Putco 1157 - being both have the 360 lighting arrangement. Roger on the tinted windows. Then again even with the side view mirrors the 05 HL stock reverse bulbs fall short of being adequate for backup lighting.

Putco PURE Premium 1157 LED http://www.etrailer.com/Lights/Putco/P231157W360.html

Are you using the 7440 or stock bulbs in your 05 HL? Thanks. http://www.carid.com/2001-toyota-hig...Shopzilla_feed

These http://www.whitenight.com/faqs.htm have been around for a while but read that workable on the 08 HLs not the 1st gen. They appear to produce a lot of light. I emailed about White Knight for the 05s but never heard back from them. Guess that meant no;-)

backup lights

I still use the OEM reverse lights, and have to be VERY careful when backing up from my driveway at night, as my neighborhood is not lit. I know what you're saying. I find that a LOT of LED lights can blind you if you look right at them but they don't PROJECT well. Modern, high-power LED's, such as ones found in high-quality flashlights, use properly desigened reflectors and they can really get out there pretty far. LED lighting is still in it's relative infancy, and while it appears that they will replace CFL's, they're not quite "there" yet. Have you tried searching for a bulb replacement that uses HALOGEN incandescent lighting?

No HALOGEN for reverse/backup located yet. Though did happen by this -

Haven't located any HALOGEN bulbs for reverse/backup yet. But did happen by this -
LED Car Light Bulbs - 40 SMD LED bulbs, 7440 LED bulbs, T20 LED bulbs
http://store.ledoption.com/LEDoption...20_smd_k31.htm Though the photos exhibiting the brightness is not realistic.

Guys, don't know if this would work in this vehicle, but... I sawed off the mounting base of a 55W 886 halogen bulb & dropped that in my Tacoma - still working fine 2 years in.

Thread: http://www.ct4wd.com/forum/showthrea...2nd-Gen-Tacoma

And it's also on TN I found: My Auxiliary Backup Lights
but jump down to where he has pics of the 886s, as the first part is an install of bumper-mounted aux back-ups - not what I'm talking about. Just the lamp upgrade.

Nokya (blue) filament is a slightly larger gauge making it brighter for a stock replacement.

Both GREAT ideas! I think the best would be the LED light bar licence plate holder, tied into the reverse lights WITH a back-up camera, also engaged with the reverse lights! I can't find that frame in black though, and mosto f the LED bars I see mounted to shine on the plate not back? ?

I put my windows down as i have my fronts tinted as well, and still can hardly see a darn thing backing up. My brake lights are brighter than my reverse lights. I would also like to find a bright bulb for my reverse.

I have the White Night on our Sequoia and Highlander, best hitch based system.

V-leds makes a license plate frame backup light (light is also sufficient, not as far of a range as the White Night) which I installed on my mother in laws RX330. http://www.v-leds.com/Exterior-LED-B...-p7516915.html

Just throwing this out to you all interested in putting out more reverse light. You might do a search in the 2nd Gen Highlander forum for a thread posted by member JMSinMD who did a mod with his Highlander, replacing the rear facing reflectors with powered white lights. It may not be 100% applicable to 1st Gen Highlanders, but the idea is still valid. Sorry, I don't have the link on-hand.
