01 Highlander - engine code P0440 (searched)

what's up, i gotta problem. my mom drives an 01 Highlander and her CEL came on and the code (when scanned at autozone) was P0440. The guy at autozone said it had to do w/emission and there are vacuum lines that run to the fuel line to suck up some of the vapor the fuel gives off and a line or how ever many could be corroded. He also suggested that it could also be the charcoal canister, and that either senario wasn't "a big deal" as in it'll run fine and safely but wouldn't pass emissions (which we DON'T have)...

1) is there a way to test to elimate and narrow down what the problem is?
2) are those fuel vacuum lines in the car under the carpeting or underneath the car?

help is greatly appreciated, (b/c if not too difficult i would like to do it myself) and if anymore info. is needed i will do my best to get the what info u need.

thanks again!

From my 2000 Tacoma manual says that's an "Evaporative Emission Control Failure", which in English is a vapor pressure problem in the fuel tank.

The most likely cause: make sure the gas cap is on correctly and it's not damaged. Believe it or not, that's important these days; the car is trying to maintain a certain amount of vapor pressure.

Otherwise, the guy from AutoZone is on the right track. Check for any damage to fuel lines or the fuel tank that might be letting gas vapor escape.
