Quick question. My wife picked up her 05 Highlander Limited from the dealer today. Door locks do not lock automatically at all. Additionally, they don't unlock either.
Looked in the manual for the programming procedure, can't find anything on it.
Does anyone know what we need to do in order to get the 05 Highlander Limited to automatically lock the door locks (either when put into drive, or after a certain speed) as well as unlock the doors (whether when put back in park, or turned off).
I have a 02 Toyota Highlander Limited 2WD, and have the same "problem."
Later on I asked TOYOTA dealership if they can change it. The answer is no.
Yet, I really doubt it. Everything with a computer can be changed by human beings.

The computer on the Highlanders cannot be reset to auto lock the doors. This is, I feel, an important feature that was sadly missed by Toyota, as well as lighting ALL power window switches for nightime use and not making the passenger's front power window control fully auto (like the driver's). While I'm at it, let me also criticize the lack of auto open control for the sunroof and there really should be a more definitive sunroof close setting. When I want to close the roof on my '05 Limited, I gotta LOOK at the damn roof so I can release the switch at the proper time so it doesn't go right into the "vent" position. This is risky business when you're moving and trying not to rear end the guy in front. Now that I've vented, I feel better...ahhhh...
Did Toyota change the operation of the Sunroof from 2001 to 2005? On my '01 Limited the sunroof auto opens and closes. To open I hold the button momentarily and it fully opens. To close I just hold the close button momentarily and it closes fully. I don't think I've ever used mine in the vent position. In fact, I'll now need to double check to see if it even has a vent position.
I am completely spoiled by the auto-close on the drivers window. Yesterday I had a loaner '05 Camry while my Highlander was getting serviced and I was very surprised to discover the Camry only had auto-open on the drivers window - not auto close.
I did notice the Camry automatically locked and unlocked the doors as I went from Drive to Park.
Sad to report, but it looks like Toyota took a big step backwards with the sunroof. The 05's do NOT have express open or close. This is a real safety issue, as far as I'm concerned. The open part I can live with, but as I said previously, when I go to close, I can't just move the control and wait until the roof closes. If I leave the control pressed too short a time, the roof will not seal, and if I leave the control pressed too long, it will then vent. What you gotta do when closing is to look up and see where the roof is, and when it makes it's final seal, release the lever. This is REAL UNSAFE when you're moving 'cause you gotta look up for awhile, and the roof NEEDS to be able to operable while moving, as far as I'm concerned. I had a lousy PT CRuiser before the Highlander, and it had express open on the roof, and had a close button that you could just press until roof closed. The PT also had high and low settings for the heated seats, which the Highlander doesn't have, and the PT also had automatic door locks, and ALL power window and power door lock switches were lit for easier nightime use... Toyota builds a grat car and they overlook some obvious things. It just goes to show - the freakin' ACCOUNTANTS run the auto industry! <grin>.
I just purchased an 05 Highlander and experienced the same problem with the sunroof not automatically opening and closing. However, mine just quit working. I took it to the dealer and it had a bad switch. They replaced it and now the automatic opening and closing feature works. It was covered under warranty but you might need to have the switch checked.
If the newer Highlanders don't have the auto close feature on the sunroof, it makes me glad I bought a used 02. mine does have the vent feature- you just press the side of the button marked tilt. I will have to check into that when I buy my next Highlander.
My 06 sunroof does auto open and auto close. I have to hold the switch a little longer than I am used to for it to do the auto open and close but it is there.
