05 Highlander Speaker Upgrade ?'s

I just joined the toyota nation by buying a 05 Toyota Highlander V6 FWD with the basic stereo setup. As most highlander owners are complaining, the speaker setup is just a dud and needs an upgrade. I'm working on a budget here so I'm just going to shoot for speaker upgrades for now. I was wondering if there are any tricky things I should know about replacing them such as if aftermarket speakers will work with the stock stereo/wiring/etc. Would deeply appreciate the help if any other owners went through this as well. Thanks!

I dont have a Highlander but I think you have four 5 1/4 inch speakers in your truck. You can fit most 6 1/2 speakers into the same opening. Crutchfield.com has a large selection of speakers and will give you free connectors to clip on to your existing speaker wiring. But if changing your speakers is anything like changing speakers in my Tacoma dont bother unless you are going to change the head unit also because the stock radio really isnt all that strong. If your going to go that far run all four speakers off a four channel amplifier because most aftermarket speakers sound like garbage run straight off a head unit. Good luck.

Yeah man, totally agree. Change the headunit before you change speakers. Aftermarket headunits have more power, its the thing that will affect it the most.

^But you'll still be left with crappy speakers, which are what actually makes the sound

I'd say save up about 300 bucks and get a set of component speakers and an amp for them.

Check out the Alpine Type-X SPX177R for about 200 bucks shipped online, then the Diamond D5300.4 on ebay for about 100 bucks shipped. Bridge the amp to do 150 watts rms x 2 and you're set.

You also need a line output convertor too, check out www.davidnavone.com
