2001 Toyota Highlander Need Help
I have a question for all of you Toyota fans. I just bought a used 2001 Toyota Highlander and I am having the same problems as most. My engine light keeps coming on and the codes state that there is a low threshold on bank 1 and bank 2 with the catalyst. If my catalytic converter is bad does Toyota have to replace this for free? I am the second owner and I did not get a warranty. I have only 50,000 on this vehicle, and in my opinion no coverter should go out this quick. Should Toyota replace free of charge?
The catalytic converter warranty is 80K, so if it is the catalytic, the dealer should replace it no charge. BTW, I own a 2001 and I had my catalytic converter replaced around 37K. The O2 sensor was also bad. Since it was out of warranty by 1K, I had to pay for it. About 30K later, the other O2 had to be replaced. Not really sure if the 1st O2 was damaged by the bad converter or not, but I thought it was pretty cheap on the dealers part not to cover it as well.
I assume your getting a P0420 or P0430 code. Your converter is covered for 80k. Have your dealer do a system check on the rear O2 sensor and check the pattern. If its jumping all over the place with the car idling at about 2000 rpms then it needs a new converter.
I just had the Check + VSC lights come on in my 2001 Limited with 69,000 miles. The lights would come on within a few seconds of starting the engine and stay on the whole time. I made an appt. to have it checked but the earliest appt. I could get was 5 days away. Those darn lights stayed on until the afternoon before my appt and then went out.
The dealer said the codes indicated a problem with the fuel delivery system. They were not able to find any problems.
Pretty funny that this original post by me was written in 2005 and I never had the convertor replaced. The engine light was reset at a dealer and they said it needed a new convertor. My local mechanic told me not worry about it until e-check time here in Ohio. It ended up staying off for 2 years and then cam eon again last year. I had it reset again at my local mechanic after getting the same errors and it passed the emissions check. Well, just yesterday it came on again. I am not sure what to think. I now have 125,000 on it and it made it from 50k without needing a new one. Any thoughts why I was able to pass emissions?
My '04 Highlander had both cats replaced by dealer at 80k got 106k on it now and no issues I have seen?
