Question 2005 Rav4 Mileage

A month ago I bought a new 2005 Rav4 (automatic transmission w/L package). I've never owned an SUV but I've owned many Toyotas during the past 20 years. I've been checking the miles per gallon, and now at 1200 miles, I've been consistently getting only about 18 MPG with mixed highway and street driving. I've been driving fairly conservatively so far for some break in time (not over the speed limit, no jack rabbit starts, etc.).

My question: 18 MPG seems very low, especially considering the estimated mileage is mid to high 20's. Before I go back to the dealer, does anyone have any comments on this poor mileage? Is this low mileage normal during the beak in time, and then it improves?

Other than the poor MPG, the Rav drives great!

Many thanks... dabronxboy

I have a 02 Rav4 with a 2.0L engine, mileage is not that great either.
Does the 2005 Rav4 comes with a 2.4L engine?

Mpg

I've got a 2005 automatic Front wheel drive. I average about 24 in 90% city driving.

The auto tranny and AWD really kill your milage. 18 mpg for an AWD auto tranny RAV4 during the winter isnt all that bad. The cold weather really kills your fuel economy too. I know that people with Corollas complain that they only get about 25 mpg during the winter.
