USA Flashing Check Engine Light

I tried to do a serch for it but it says no matches. What does it means? I believe, by the way its running its the timing belt. Is there a thread here that describes the best way to change this and is there anything else I need to change while I am in there? Thanks for the help. I will post my findinds to help the next person.

I own a 1997 Rav4 with 160,000 miles on it.

Autozone will do a free code check IIRC. If it is flashing generally it means a knock sensor or something. I wouldn't drive it if I didn't know. Flashing means bad stuff and you could damage things!

Thank you for the post. I can't believe the search tool for this website is so horrible. I will continue to search for some timing belt information, when I find it I will post here.

Looks like you should replace the water pump also, as it is being run by the timing belt also. Here is a kit. Can anyone comment on the manufacture?

I know I am jumping on the timing belt being bad. I sounds if the engine is bogging down, so any other comments to steer me in a different direction is much appreciated. Thanks again.

Do not drive it if light is flashing any more than you have to,like to auto parts store or repair guy to have code read.
What ever they say code says or means it does not mean you have to change parts it just shows area where trouble is. Most sensors can be checked with ohm meter and fuel pressure can also be checked.
Water pump and tensioner needs to be changed along with belt.
The biggest cost is labor getting to water pump and belt.
There is step by step here on timing belt and a lot more. www.rav4world.com

Alright got some codes.........

P0446
Define- Evaporative emission control system vent control circuit fault.

Probable cause-
Open or short circuit condition
Poor electrical connection
Faulty CCV vent control solenoid

P0301
Define- cylinder 1 misfire detected

Probable Cause
Weak/missing spark
Plugged fuel injector
Engine mechanical fault
Large Vacuum leak specific to cylinder

That is all the codes. Does anyone know what they point to be the problem?
Thanks in Advance.

Does your oil look milky? Bubbles in the radiator? I always worry about head gaskets. I don't know I might try a can of injector cleaner in every tank for awhile, Maybe throw a new set of plugs and wires on it, couldn't hurt with 160k for sure.

P0301
Define- cylinder 1 misfire detected
Timing belt would not throw this code
Rav4s have a lot of trouble with plug wires,do not use bosh wires!!!
Try timing light or spark checker for spark all the time.
If you pull the plug and look for spark it may do it for a little bit but still can be bad.
Also could be cap or rotor.
It also could be a valve or head gasket but look at above first.

P0446
Define- Evaporative emission control system vent control circuit fault.
Do you turn gas cap till it clicks 2-4 times and do you stop as SOON as pump stops?
These 2 thing are a must with newer cars.
All the system is is a vent on filler neck with check valve, hose to charcoal canister with a couple valves which feeds gas vapors back into intake.
If you pump gas after pump stops the charcoal can get too much gas and need replaced, around $200 or so...ouch,do not over fill.
Look at gas cap seal also.
Have heard many times with flashing light do NOT drive unless you really have to.
