My brother is thinking about getting one but the salesmen don't really seem like they want to budge much on the price. When I bought my civic, I got something like 2gs off one of the lowest models. For the RAV4, the guy was offering something like $900 off. We walked out of course and they called back with a better offer. But where is the line drawn?

Also, are they all built in Japan like they claim? Thanks

Also, how would you rate this compared to other cars like CRV and Xtera?

I don't have a RAV4, but I can tell you that Toyota doesn't really mark up their prices because they are already so expensive without the markup that they wouldn't be competitive if they did.

One way to check if your RAV is made in Japan is to check the VIN number...if it starts with J, it's made in Japan. I'm pretty sure all of them are made there.

The RAV4's off road handling and 4WD system is bar none when compared to the Honda system. The Honda suspension is based on it's cars, while the RAV4's suspension is actually purpose designed for off roading.
The RAV4's AWD is permanently on all the time, while Honda's only turns on when it senses traction loss- there is no auxilary lever or button to engage the Honda 4WD.

Now, when comparing the Xterra to RAV4, there is also no comparison. The Xterra is close to 4Runner class in terms of off-road prowess- with a truck based suspension pulled right out of the Frontier pickup, and part time 4WD that is an off road prerequisite.

All in all, the CRV would probably give the best ride, best fuel economy- sacraficing off road and foul weather handling. To me, the CRV is just a stationwagon with 4WD.

The RAV4 is a mix between truck and car, offering the best of two worlds, carlike ride with true off road capability.

The XTERRA is a full blown sport utility built of off roading.

No don't get a RAV4. The CRV is not a station wagon, it is considered a truck since it made to Truck Trends and Car and Driver 5 Best Trucks.

Next door neighbour has a Rav4, it has some nice styles but no, dont get it. Do a comparison on edmunds.com The CRV beats the Rav4 in almost every specs/feature. The CRV has a larger cargo area too, but I would not take it for some serious off roading.

Here is a picture of a CRV doing mudtrails in the states (not mine)
http://www.gocrvclub.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14

Insurance is also cheaper for the CRV.
My dad's new qoute is 5527
Rav4 is 5827
And 2002 Corolla is 5154

I would definately choose the CRV. Not a serious offroader vehicle though but since my dad is like 47 and he doesnt want to do offroading, its a simple go getter vehicle. (Wait till I can drive, I'll do mudtrails all the time and try to spin the rear wheels during puddles of water :grin

Edit

Holy sh*t! If your brother can afford the SE or the SE-SC, get that! f**k the CRV. Omg should've asked for opinions. BUT BUT BUT, if your financing the car, have fun with Nissan high quality, high prices, parts  compared to Honda.

I don't like the CRV at all in terms of the design.

I didn't like the old RAV4 design either, but I give Toyota two thumbs up for the new facelift version!

They really took the edge and revamp the whole vehicle and now it looks "smarter" just like the Celi. I mean look at the new CRV facelift, do you notice any difference at all?

Not to mention there are tons of modifying parts in Japan for the Rav4, too bad nobody is souping those up in NA.

Hahaha...Honda's 4WD system is not something i'd put my money on...not to mention the exposed rear double A arm suspension is just asking for a rock to take it off.

The photo of that CRV is probably a picture of it BEFORE it got stuck...no sane person would ask it to do more than just a dirt road.

Both the CRV and RAV-4 to me are not real trucks as they are unibodies...a truck needs to have a real chassis. Difference is that the RAV-4 has a better off-road suspension and 4WD package than the CRV does. Is a Subaru Forester a Station Wagon? Yes it is...CRV is in the same class as the Forester when it comes to off-road...(they both suck)

The CRV can't touch the RAV4 off road capability...nor can it touch the RAV4's 4WD system...

You'll make SUV hater Jim Kenzie proud...
"More and more people are purchasing SUV's, huge double lane gas sucking smog causing behemoths that would never see more than a dirt driveway"

In the SUV world, the CRV is comparable to a Yamaha V-Star showing up to a Harley-Davidson meet.

BTW, your dad is getting raped by insurance for those cars...i'm 18 with 1 speeding ticket and insurance on the 4Runner is only $1070.

Its because of 1 at fault and 1 not at fault but no police came to determine that
