USA Rav4 Tsb

I have a US-spec 2001 RAV4 with 36,000 miles. I've come across a TSB [EG010-02] that appears to offer "Enhanced Engine Performance" as a bonus if installed.

My RAV4 does not have the problem this TSB fixes but I am intrigued by the bonus engine performance. Of course, my local dealer will not do the TSB ... it involves new ECM software ... because the fundamental problem is not occuring.

Has anyone had this TSB done and what, if any, is the enhanced engine performance?

Thanks.

The TSB calls for updating the software in the ECM (the main computer). The problem it's trying to solve is a check engine light and a DTC code for "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold". (Codes are P0420 or P0430.)

The performance increase (whatever it is - TSB doesn't say) is a side-effect of changing the ECM program.

The TSB applies to 01 and 02 RAV4's with serial numbers (last 7 digits of the VIN) below the following:

Tahara Plant, 2WD: 0069250 4WD: 0164186
Shokki Plant, 2WD: 6006687 4WD: 6060655

I had this done to mine as it kept throwing the CEL on with codes that matched the TSB. I didn't notice any enhanced engine performance after this was done.

The CEL light no longer comes on after having the ECU updated, but that's about it.

Toyota will not perform the update under warranty unless the CEL comes on, however, it only costs about $50 if you want to pay to have it done. If you are that worried about it, ask your dealer if you can pay to have it done anway.

IMO don't waste your time, the RAV is not going to be 'seat of the pants' faster because of it.

I honestly notice more of a performance gain after doing a Seafoam treatment.

just more update on this, the CEL came on again about a week ago, same codes, Toyota said that since the software update hade been done and the light still came on, that it meant the catalitic converter needed to be replaced.

With the new cat and whatever else they did, the RAV runs better than it ever did and the gas mileage is now where it is suppose to be. The gas mileage in this car was always a little low, but looks fixed
