Question Is it me, or do all Previas exhaust whistle whenever you accelerate?

Hey guys, and Previa owners, Is it just me or do all Previa Exhausts whistle whenever it accelerates? Every Previa I see on the Freeway, whistles. Whenever I hear a loud whistling, I know it's a Previa, and I'm 100% right. I just find it pretty funny.

My '96 whistles big-time on accelaration, always has. Seems it got worse after I just got the muffler redone. I guess I should call the muffler place and talk to them about it?

I love the whistle. When I first test drove my 91 previa I took it up the questa grade here in San Luis Obispo, and when it kicked into second going up the onramp I was thrilled to find it SOUNDED like it had a warp drive as well as felt like it. I've fallen in love with my own little shuttlecraft. I get all warm and fuzzy when I hear that distinctive whistle from another previa going by...

90-94 MT/AT w/o S/C....late 94 optional S/C
95-97 AT w/ S/C (Standard)

***97 Model Revision
"reduced engine vibration-> (engine mounts); tilted engine x-degree's"

like xpeed....i can easily tell when a previa is coming around ....

i have a 95 s/c previa... i had the toyota universal header pipe replaced... this piece consisted of the 2 to 1 head piece, a flexpipe, a catalytic converter and the O2 sensor opening....this fixed my whistling.... this happens to fix most people's problem w/ whistling and cat. conv. rattling sounds...

after a year, i heard the whistling again. i then had the two catalytic converters replaced w/ high flows and it worked w/o whistling for about 3 months.....now i'm back w/ the whistling sound

mechanics say the problem is with the engine mounts..... a lot of engine vibration comes out from this mid mounted-tilted engine that it tends to loosen at the engine mounts and indirectly causes a exhaust system leakage from the joints connecting the exhaust system to the engine......most of us hear that whistling sound during accelleration .... the harder you accelerate w/ your previa, the torquing action of the engine increases, and thus the joints split and out comes that whistling sound....on idle/low rpms...the whistling is absent....

just after some recent research, others had the problem at the 02 sensor area...

others believe it is because of the supercharger...... i've seen numerous previa's (90-94's) that also have the whistling sound and those models don't have a supercharger.

the 97's got away from this problem through it's last revision....

i got some people who change there mufflers, some who changed the 1st catalytic converter (btw...the s/c models came w/ 2 cat. conv. to meet emmission standards)...and some who just tighten the bolts on the exhaust pipes......

is there anyone who has a definate fix to this whistling sound rather than having the mounts replaced/tighted?

any help and additional info/correction is appreciated

Same Problem

My '92 Previa LE developed an exhaust whistle under acceleration that worsened over time. The muffler shop replaced the flex pipe twice, the muffler 3 times, first 2x with aftermarket parts & second with factory parts. The whistle came back immediately the first time, & after 2 months in both the 2nd & 3rd cases. They called 2 Toyota Dealers & the dealers have experienced the problem, but have no solution. The muffler shop says my Catalytic Converter is OK. Any other tips?

I can clearly remember that sound. I drove my aunt's Previa. Felt like I was gonna go back in time or something.

According to the muffler shop & 2 Toyota dealers, there is no known fix. Only some previas develop the whistle, and they can go for many years before it happens. My Previa developed the problem around 160,0000 miles. Once they get the whistle, it seems to be unfixable. I find this hard to believe, but it's the best info I have so far.

AH! So it does whistle on all Previas in some point, and I thought it was just me hearing weird things in my head.
