ever since I bought my Previa,just about three years ago,it's a 95 le/sc,it will idle high whenever it's cold outside,whenever it's warm outside it will idle so low it feels like it wants to stall,i took it to berlin city toyota atleast 4 times,the first time they found that the secondary throttle cable was jammed,the rest of the times they claimed that there was nothing wrong with it,I've replaced the catyllic converter,o2 sensor before the cat,and had the throttle body cleaned twice,still to no avail,any help anyone?
It's called high idle, fast idle, etc, and nearly every car does it when its cold out to warm the engine up quicker. I don't know why they wouldnt tell you this at Toyota.
If your Previa SC has fully warmed up but still idles high, you might be a victim of "flakes in the coolant". Apparaently, Previa SC is prone to have this problem as it ages especially if the cooling system is not serviced regularly. Locate your intake filter box and look for a metal pipe with a tee that has a rubber host connected to. Disconnect the rubber hose and more than likely, you will see a lot of black flakes clogging the hose. Do your best to clean it up and you will be fine.

if you have problems with your idle circuit whenever warm or cold, remember the throttle body has a idle air control valve located underneath it and since its a supercharged previa it would be the throttle body closest to the airflow meter. also make sure your egr valve is not on allthe time slightly, because that will cause a vauum leak and the engine will idle high to compensate!
whenever it's warm outside it idles really low once at operating temp when it's really cold outside,even at operating temperature it idles out of sight.
the throttle body has been cleaned about a half dozen times in two years becuase that was thought to be the problem,replaced throttle positioning sensor, still to no avail
The high idle when warm in cold weather is cause by the black flakes in the coolant system. The only way to solve it is to remove the coolant line that goes to the metal pipe near the air filter. You will need to be very careful while cleaning out the flakes. The metal pipe has an inner jacket, if you puncture this jacket, you will pump coolant to the engine. I have a couple small pictures that I could Post if still required.
yes,please do,will a normal coolant flush fix it or does the hose have to be removed.I recently had an oil change and they said that the coolant was in very baad shape and would be lucky to withstand 15 below.

It looks like I am suffering from same high iddle problem. Even after couple hours driving it is still high iddle. Could you please post pictures so I can check if the black flakes is in the coolant system is problem.

I took a 200 mile trip yesterday and noticed that when my van was in park or neutral the idle was very high even though the van had been running for over an hour. The outside temp. was aroung 10 degrees F. I have a 95 sc with 109K miles on it. I tried to locate the hose that Bratman talked about, but I'm not sure which one I need to remove and inspect. Please post some pics. for clarification.

the hose that everyone is talking about regarding the high/fast idle due to clogging of the coolant/water bypass is right under the hood, near your air cleaner box. open the hood, locate the air filter box. it is connected to the MAF sensor, which is then connected to the intake tube. Look at the intake tube, there is ONE aluminum pipe that goes into it. Close to the top, where the AL pipe connects to the intake tube, is a rubber hose that makes a "T" to the AL pipe. That is the rubber hose you want to remove and check if there is something clogging it up in there.
All these pipe/tubes are meant to distribute the engine heat to the throttle body and EGR to bring them up to operating temperature quicker. This is especially important during cold temperatures, hence the problem is more noticeable when it is cold.
I found these pictures on the Yahoo Previa Forum. The filter should be installed with the filter arrow toward the tee. I used toothpicks and Q-tips to clean my tee out. If you have a small mirror you can use it to look inside the tee to see if you got all the flakes.
Hello, If you look under the vehicle, you will see the other end of the steel pipe and another tee also. The coolant hose goes into the egr valve.
Remove the coolant hoses from the steel pipe and with compressed air blow from the tee by the engine. I just did mine this Sat.
Works like new............ Hope this helps ............................JM
