Hi All,
I am looking at buying a 1994 Previa All Trac. The only outstanding question I have is is it possible to tow anything (particularly a small boat)? And, if so, does anyone know the towing capacity rating of the van? Other than that question, I'm pretty much sold on the Previa, and can't wait to get it!
Thanks!
We have a 92 Previa. I have towed several small things (utility trailers, Uhauls etc). I believe it is rated for 3000 lbs w/ a toung rating for 350 lbs. We went camping w/ 5 people and a uhaul trailer into the Sierra mountains. There were no issues, but going up one hill, we could only creep along.
yep, back when i worked at U-haul, there was a guy who pulled up in a previa all trac--- i didn't know they were ever made at the time. he wanted out biggest open trailer the 6x 12..which big. i said noo..nahh...but proved me wrong

Its admazing how many people think that the Previa has a V6 (even the people selling them). Anyways, I've towed a 6x12 closed and 5x8 closed with 0 problems. Even in the rain on a hill, RWD had no problems.
Thanks for the info. So you say it is good for 3000 lbs, then? That would be far more than adequate for the small sailboat I would tow with it. Thanks again, and I think I'll have a Previa in a couple of weeks!
The hitch for the Previa is a Class 2, 1 1/4" square receiver, rated for 3500 lbs. You can go to etrailer.com and buy the hitch that fits the Previa. It cost me about $130. It's easy to install yourself, takes about an hour.
This information is listed in the owners manual also under the passenger sunvisor in my 93'. Call Toyota they would have this information as well.
On another note the RWD is only rated to around 3500 pounds (trailer weight) and a maximum of 45 miles per hour. For those of you who are towing at highway speeds greater than 45 miles per hour I just want to thank you for endangering my life, the lives of every other person that you pass, as well as your own... (even though you seem to have a wreckless disreguard for everbody's safety).
Toyota did not post these ratings for the fun of it!!! Putting this information in writing does not help them sell vehicles. If they cannot safely reach most highway speeds it is not a selling feature. (think about it!)
The all wheel drive version may be different I don't know.
Thanks for the info. I did see the note on the Passenger's visor. The 45mph limit is fine, as the highest speed limit on the towing route is 35 anyway, not to mention it will only be about a total of 15 miles a year. I will however add an auxiliary Transmission Cooler, as I once had a Jeep with a broken transmission because of overheating. Don't want a repeat of that.
Would all towing with a previa be restricted to 45mph? I have a 94 previa and I'm about to buy a pop up camper that weighs 1800lbs. I understand that the 45mph max speed will apply to the max towing weight of 3500lbs, but if the weight of the trailer is no where near the max, does it mean the safe max speed increases?
I am looking at buying a 16ft bowrider having a total weight of boat, trailer and motor of 2200 lbs. I know that the Previa is rated for 3500 lbs but does naybody have any experiences towing a boat. I will be installing an optional transmission cooler. Also do you tow with the over drive switch in the off position?
I am looking for a hitch for my 95 alltrac previa. Please let me know if you can ship it to me. I can pay via paypal. Let me know how much it will cost by USPS ground. Shipping will be on me. Let me know. Thank you. Joe. 630 220 3036.

I guess it's been a while since I've been on here! I ended up not getting that 94, as it was sold when I went to buy it. I did not get one until yesterday. I bought a 91 DX All-Trac from my dad's friend. It has 445000 miles and is running like new! He and I installed a hitch he had for it in his garage last night, and it was a cinch. It tows my small boat (about 600 lbs with trailer) beautifully. I will be going out today to get an auxiliary transmission cooler to keep that from going on me. It is on its second transmission, a rebuilt, after having 3 rebuilds on the original...
'91 Previa Le, stock rrdrive, no all track, no abs, no mus-no-fuss. I have pulled the 6x12 U-Hall loaded, severl times over 500 mi., NO Problems. 60+ when it was younger, now restrict to 50 mph as it seems to like it there. 222k mi. now.
I own a 5'x14' w/ 4' high sides & pulled it LOADED w/ all sorts of crap. to the dump. Many times. No trans cooler, but I would not turn one down if offered. Just flush the trans fluid every 2 yrs. Never any problems, except that one time... a young Smart Ass U-Hall Type told me that it would not work & refused to rent the 6x12 to me.
So I just went to a DIFFERENT U-Haul store & got what I wanted.
My 4 Banger rrd Previa still runs circles around my Wife's 6 Banger fwd Odyssey.
I also prefer to own a Conestoga vs a Buck-board, as they are more useful...... Now if I could just
figure out how to get the damn back windows to open wider..... Stupid Soccer-Mom's.
