USA 91 LC Engine Ticking

I have a 91 Land Cruiser that I purchased July 2007. Since I bought it i've always heard a ticking noise from my engine. I've been a Honda guy for many years and know practically nothing about Toyota's. So when I bought it, I thought it was just a simple valve adjustment. When I got a major tune up done, the mechanic told me that Land Cruiser's don't need valve adjustments. A few of my friends have said that it might be the injectors. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The engine most likely uses shims to adjust the clearance. Use a piece of rubber hose as a stethoscope and attempt to locate the noise. If an injector you may be able to feel it operating.

it could be pinging from a bad air/fuel mixture .... my friend's 89 Cruiser has been doing this lately

if its a metallic pinging/knocking sound ... try higher octane fuel and see if it stops .... if it does, then bring it in to a shop and tell them your engine is pinging/knocking and they should know what to do

Thanks for the reply everyone! I tried to use Lucas fuel injector cleaner and so far it's running a little better and the ticking sounds a little quieter. I'll try it out for a couple more tanks of gas.

You have the 3FE motor in your Cruiser.

I have an 89 FL62 and it has the same motor. Mine "ticks" too and I know I should adjust the valves, but I just haven't got around to it yet.

If you are going to wrench on your Cruiser youself, the first thing I'd recommend you get is the Factory Service Manual. They are spendy ($80 or so) but worth every penny. There is no comparison to the Hayens or Chilton manuals. About the only thing they are good for is the recycle bin!

Anyway check out the IH8MUD forums (www.ih8mud.com) for info on how to do the valve adjustment.

Here is a link to go to for a place to start;

Good Luck!
