Question Full-Time 4wheel drive question...

We have a 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser (FZ-J80) equipped with a 4.5L inline six cylinder engine. It has an automatic transmission and full time 4 wheel drive.

My question is, is there a way to convert this vehicle into a 2X4? Would it make a difference in fuel consumption?

Thanks.....

The easiest way would be to remove the front drive shaft.

I don't know what kind of mileage you are getting now, but Cruisers are not know for their great mileage!

I wouldn't expect to get more than about 17 mpg.

Post your question on the 80 Series board at www.ih8mud.com.

You have to remember you are driving a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a huge brick on the highway. Don't expect a dramatic difference converting it into a 2wd vehicle. Good luck though!

currently our land cruiser get more or less 14 mpg...

removing the front drive shaft is too much... what i am interested in is more of a switch that can be placed inside the LC which switches the vehicle from 2x4 or 4x4...because 4x4 would still be useful sometimes... is there a switch out there that would make this possible?

I'm sure you can make the 4x4 switchable, but IMO, it won't make that much of difference because you'll still be carrying around the extra weight of the front differential and other 4x4 components. To get better mileage I would say keep your LC well maintained, keep your tires properly inflated, use synthetic oil, diff fluid, gear oil etc. and that should give you an extra 1-2 MPG better mileage.

You would have to put the transfercase out of a FJ62 on your Cruiser to accomplish what you want. Then you'd also have to change your front hubs to manual hubs otherwise you'd still be spinning everything all the way back to the transfer case.

The 80 Series transfer case is a full time 4WD case.

I don't know if you've looked at the Mud board lately, but there are several replies to your question on your post there.
