Question 88LC Stuck in 4wd

I just bought an 88 LC from a guy who put the springs above the axles to jack it up. It's stuck in 4wd, and shakes at any speed over15mph. The guy said before he moved the axles it didnt shake, so i kinda dont think its the tires. It has the spare on the right rear so maybe it is the tires. I shimmed the transfer case down 1 1/2 inch but that didnt help the shake at all. I'm thinking the shaske is comming from being stuck in 4wd? I took the switch out of the dash and tried to check with a meter if it was changing state but there are 5 wires commin off it, and i dont know what they do. Im not sure what to do next There are manual hubs in from were those factory?

Please help

When a SOA (spring over axle) is done there are a multitude of things that can cause vibration.

One of the main causes is drive shaft angle.

When I did mine, I had to have the rear drive shaft lengthened by about 4" and the front one by about 3".

If you are going to have it done have them install a CV joint, it will make a world of difference.

The stuck in 4WD could be an issue with the transfer case, maybe there is a vacuum line not hooked up, or the vacuum switches on the firewall.

Can you put the transfer case shifter into neutral and does the light on the shifter (the one below the AT Temp light) come on?

Here is another place to post up your questions.

The Mud board is kind of the definitive place for Cruisers!

Good luck!

Thanksfor the link, lots of good info there. I think I got some bad advice on shimming the transfer case. With out making any adjustment to the trans it seems like it would be putting pressure on it. Aslo it created a weird angle where i could no longer shift into 4w low. I put the transfer case back were it was and ordered some high angle drive shfts from driveshaft superstore.

I did that before i saw your post or i'd have picked your brain on how yours is set up. Do they look like what you were talking about?

I can put the transfer case into neutral but maybe my lights are different than yours. I have an "A.T. " light and below that i have an "AT oil temp"light. If i put the transfer case in neutral and put the car in park the "A.T. P" light does come on. I apologize for my mechanical ineptness.

I'l look into those 35s. How wide did you go? 12.50 plenty wide for a weekend warrior? Is there any advantage to the 16" rim? Does it hold a bead any better? I'm hoping to get this thing out on the trail in the next couple of weeks.

There was a cool roof rack build on that web sit you linked me, i want to try to build. http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...roof-rack.html

Thanks for your help, ill let you know how it goes.

Remember, if you do get a shaft with a CV joint at one end (the t-case end), you have to rotate the pinion so it is pointing up towards the case.

If you are running a non-CV shaft, you want the pinion parallel with the ground.

Otherwise you will have vibes.
