It's the alternator internal regulator. Stop searching and change it. Go to any good alternator rebuilt shop and order this :

Transpo : IN218 - ±30$ (http://195.125.241.148/cgi-win/product.exe?IN218)

Or go at your Toyota dealer ans order :

3B 12V voltage regulator - w/ inc regulator:

OEM : 27700-57060 : ±290$
OEM remanufactured for Toyota by Denso 27700-5760-84 : ±80$

.... I face the same problem with my ex-BJ60 and my actual BJ70. I know what i'm talking about. trust me.

Don't rebuilt the alternator... just change the regulator. It's not so hard to do by yourself. Go get the 3B factory service manual in the charging system section.

Thanks so much. It's interesting...when I turn on my lights I don't have this issue....only when lights are off.

I checked with my toyota dealer and the remanufactured part from denso doesn't come up in his numbers.....any idea where I can get it? Good price compared to their cost.

I'll suggest you to check for the transpo regulator first. It's much cheaper and work great for me since 4 years.

My opinion..

Called my alternator shop and he said the IN218 is for a 12v system. My BJ is 24V. Is this the right part number?

Thanks

Oups !

The 1985 BJ70 is 12V and the 1986 - 1987 are 24V...

Well, on the Transpo web site it show IN217 for a 24V and it's a cross reference for the OEM part number (27700-57050).

Ok I ordered the part as it does coincide with the OEM part. The guy at the alternator shop swears it sounds like the rectifier is blown but I am going to go with your advice and try the regulator. Thanks again for the swift response!

How much did you pay for it ($) ?

Don't forget to disconect your batterie poles before working on ! You can't imagine the size of a spark if you ground a wire on a 24V electrical system !!
