Land Cruiser wont start

I have a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser 4 x 4. It is having issues starting. Basically it is getting power, all lights on, but wont start. We have replaced the starter 3x in the last few years, thinking it was just bum starters. Then we replaced the solenoid, as someone mentioned it may be that. It was not. Sometimes it starts, other times it doesnt. Recently we found that if the back hatch is open or if the emergency brake is on, it will not start. Also, as of yesterday, when it doesnt start. if I hit the power window switch that sometimes allows it to start. Does anyone know what the problem may be? It was suggested that we get a Ford solenoid and some new battery wire and rewire it, going thru the Ford solenoid to the starter. Not sure how that is done, if that is even the solution. Any help would be fantastic

Do you mean it cranks but won't start, or doesn't crank at all when you turn the key?

it doesnt crank over at all. the dash lights come on, all power on and working (windows, etc), and when I turn the key, all i hear is a "click". When we tap on the solenoid/starter with a hammer lightly, it starts up immediately. But hard to do when Im out alone w/o a passenger =C

misshoneybee,

Sounds like that solenoid has gone south again. Which is part of the starter. I suggest spending the extra money if you have not done it already and get a new starter not a rebuild. I hate the rebuild stuff.

I highly doubt its the solenoid. We have replaced both that and the starter (new , not a rebuild) several times now. And to no avail it fails within days to months if works at all. Theres most definately some problem in that general department, but after 3 new starters and solenoids, it has to be something else

I have the same problem. I have a 96 tlc and randomly it will not start...just a click. After 3-5 tries so far I have got it to start but it's not good. Have you had any luck figuring out anything?

Has anyone looked into the starter relay????? Maybe they are intermittent and are going bad? If you have replaced the starter so many times, its time to look at the relay.

I have had the same problem with my '91 Land Cruiser. I find it seems to often be related to engine temp ie: when I get it up to full temp, shut it off then try to start it within an hour and a half or until it cools completely, dash lights but no turnover. I've also found that a jump from another vehicle seems to override the issue, otherwise I just have to wait it out. Had starter replaced twice. Two mechanics now say the ignition wiring is solid. Really annoying and I'm trying to find the answer. Maybe a temp sensor issue?

Some thoughts:

Make sure your ground wire where it mounts to the block is clean. remove the wire, wire brush down the surfaces, then reattach.

Also, have you checked the adjustment of the nuetral safety switch? a possibility....

lastly, Ive seen a friend go through 8 (yes eight) rebuilt starters through the local "bargain" parts store and never could fix the problem. At last he bit the bullet and got a new factory starter and it worked fine. What is your time, money, labor, frustration worth? (is what he said).

hope you figure it out. Please post up when you do.

Mine won't either

I have had the same problem with my 1995 cruiser for the past 3 years. New battery, new starter/solenoids, and new neutral safety switch. It starts every morning, but after a long, hot drive and I shut it off, it will not turn over until I wait until it cools off. What could it be?

I had this issue pop up on an old Pontiac gto. When the motor was up to operating temp it would not crank over. but after cooling for a while it would crank and start. one of my street stock friends suggested a six volt positive battery cable (much thicker and heavier). I never had that problem again.

Yes it now sounds like resistance in the wires to the starter ( either positive or negative). When the wire gets hot with internal corrosion it will not let the trons flow. And thus with a large draw like the starter it fails to move the current when hot.
