hey all, i am new to posting threads so bear with me. i am torn between the new model tacomas and the fj cruiser. i really like the exterior looks of the fj, and i think the interior stands out much more than that of the tacoma. i love the tacoma and it seems to be the perfect truck, however, the interior isn't really eye catching to me, and i probably wouldn't utilize the bed much.
does anyone who owns an fj or know someone that owns an fj know if the large blindspots that are caused by those huge 20 inch wide columns a big problem? do rear passengers feel calustrophobic since none of the rear windows go down? also, what's with all the plastic (i.e. bumpers)? i went to the dealer and felt the bumpers, and it seemed like i could rip them right off. plastic is meant for toys, not toyotas. any suggestions on which is the better car?
thanks. anyone got any complaints on all the plastic??
plasic is shitty, but cheap to manufacture complex shapes, like bumpers and fender flares. metal would have been nice, but would have been more expensive.
anyone from a cold climate knows what the winter does to plasic should you hit something.
I you need to haul a lot then go with the Tacoma. If not, then go with the equally capable FJ Cruiser. It's personal preference: badass off road truck or badass off road SUV. I have to say that I love my Tacoma, but I'd get an FJ Cruiser if there were no Tacos.
thanks for the advice. i am probably going to have to make a choice soon too, as i am in the works of selling my 1997 4runner. i have to say, the tacoma is really badass but i've gotten too used to having an suv. i'm thinking of upgrading the sound system, as the 8 inch subwoofer just won't do. i also want to put these 20 inch trd wheels on http://www.trdracing.com/wheels/wheels.htm (they're the first on the very top). what do u all think?
Hi I just had to turn my 2001 toyota tacoma back to Toyota it had 300000 miles on and it was in mint condition I then bought a FJ I have to say I loved my truck but I think the FJ has it beat ( I also never used the bed) alot of friends and neighbors did
they are both badass. period. if you really don't think you won't need the truck, get the fj. if i could have both, i would.
i have never really been without a truck though and i use my bed all the time, even with the canopy.
there are a million mods you can do to either one.
yes, the fj's do have pretty bad blind spots but-you can get used to them and learn to deal with them.
the plastic thing you mention is going to be standard with any new vehicle. there are a few different and very attractive aftermarket metal bumpers available for either rig.
like i said, if you don't think you need a truck (you have a 4runner already, you you'd know) get the fj for sure, you'll love it.
You've got to remember they are different & have different uses. I've got an 08 FJ and because I use a wheelchair, the suicide doors are ideal, a Taco just wouldn't be as usable for me, mind you, you can put alot more in the Taco bed than you could ever fit in the back of an FJ. My son is 6'3" and drives with the seat pushed back, he could use 1-2 more notches in the seat slide on the FJ just to be comfortable, whereas the Taco off road package, 4 door & short bed is just perfect for his size.
I had a Tacoma and now drive an FJ so I am pretty qualified to give my opinion on this subject. First of all, I loved my Tacoma and sometimes wish I still had it but the FJ has full time four wheel drive (manual 6 speed). This suits me better in the snow. The biggest problem I had with the Tacoma was the lack of interior space followed closely by the fact that EVERYONE was constantly asking me to move things for them! Just one more thing.....why does everyone complain about the FJ's plastic bumpers? What do you think the Tacoma's bumpers are made from? That's right PLASTIC!!! In fact all the Toyota vehicles have plastic bumpers. I think the only vehicles that don't have plastic bumpers are the Jeep TJ and possibly a couple of trucks.
I currently have both. My wife drives the FJ and I drive the Tacoma. I love both. Choosing between the two, you have to look at what you are going to use it for. As for the FJ (this is a FJ foum), you do get used to the blind spots. The plastic bumpers are more noticeable due to their shape, but 90% of vehicles out there have plastic bumpers. You can always upgrade to ARB, thats what I did.
Back in 2001 i bought a nwe toyota tacoma red 4x4 trd extended cab and 8 years and 300000 miles later it ran like a charm I had to sell it back to toyota for frame rot so i turned around and bought an 2008 FJ i love this one too miss my truck bit verry happy with fj
