Has anyone heard the FJ with the TRD exhaust? I guess it ships with other toyota's similar engine. I don't know that I've heard one, but I'm about to place my order for the FJ and I'm in the air as far as the cat back system. Is it worth it??

I've heard it. Not impressed. Sounds a little high pitched, kinda ricey. The only reason I would get it is if it actually improved performance.

I disagree with the "ricey" comment. I think it makes the Toyota 6 cylinder sound decent, and I get compliments on it. Know what you're getting: It's not going to have an American 8 cylinder dual exhaust sound. I got mine (x2: 1- FJ Cruiser, 1- 06 PreRunner) knowing the performance gain, if any, was minimal and up for debate. I like the fact that it is a factory option. If you take into consideration the above & depending on your negotiated purchase price, ordering the FJC with the TRD Exhaust can be considering a good financial purchase. Good luck.
I agree with Steve that obviously a 6 cyl. will never sound like a 8 cyl. no matter what kind of exhaust setup you've got. I haven't heard one on the FJ yet so I won't venture any opinion as to the "riceyness" but I have had headers on 22r's & they did have a nice sound when you wind out the rpm's. In theory, performance should be helped with a better exhaust & in my experience a factory exhaust system lasts way longer than any aftermarket setup I've ever installed regardless of the brand or apparent quality. Long live the factory stuff.

dont get it, where i used to work there were a lot of complaints of the trd exhaust causing rattling noises, i think the roof rack. if you still want to get it ask a service advisor if there was a service bulletin regarding this issue
I am going to disagree with the member from Walnut. No noises reported with the TRD Exhaust from me since May '06. I've been to Hollister OHV Park once and met 8 FJ owners there. No one complained about the exhaust. There have been a variety of complaints about rattling noises and the results were everything from loose seatbelts to stuff left in map pockets - and, yes, some have found their roof rack cross beams were not tight for some reason. I check a variety of forums, and have never read a complaint about rattle from the TRD Exhaust.

A dirt biking magazine has a motto, "Loud exhaust = closed trails". Fortunately, with the TRD Exhaust outlet right behind the rear tire, it's not a good design for off-road anyway. We are fighting to keep the off-road areas open, and having a loud exhaust is not the type of attention we want from those who would like to ban all off-road activity. Some people do go into the back country for serenity. We all need to be responsible if we want to keep trails and off-road areas open.
By the way, it doesn't sound very good anyway. The Toyota V6 is no BMW I6 engine, and sounds more like a UPS delivery truck with the TRD exhaust.
There probably is no performane or mileage gain either, since the stock muffer volume is HUGE, which greatly reduces backpressure.

We're going to disagree on the sound note issue. To each his own.
As far as volume & trail closures- I do not follow your argument. The TRD Exhaust is not loud. It is far quieter than a lot of other trail rigs I pass and certainly not as loud as a motorcycle: 4-stroke or 2.
As far as the tip location: It's no lower than the stock position - just angled differently.
By the way what do you drive?

Totally agree on the sound note issue. Everyone has a different set of ears.
As you mentioned, the TRD is not super loud, but it is louder than stock, and it is louder than MY 4-stroke Honda on/off-road motorcycle. Just because it is not as loud as some other vehicle, doesn't mean it isn't irritating people who would like to see a trail closed.
The TRD system has a larger diameter tip, hanging below the body work, while the stock system has a turndown at the rear. I'll measure it next time I get the chance.
I drive an FJ Cruiser, of course!
