Mountain bike in the back of an FJ

Hi Guys,

I've been visiting this site regularly for a few years now, and it's time I quit lurking, mostly because I have a question.

I'm thinking about trading in my 2005 Tacoma for an FJ, but I wanted to know if a mountain bike will easily fit in the back (without taking any wheels off) with the rear seats folded down. Has anybody tried this?

Thanks,
Chad

Mountain Bike inside the FJ

Rico1042, yes a whole mountain bike will fit with both wheels on in the back of an FJ with the rear seats folded down. However, you might have to the turn the handle bars 180 degrees around to make the bike shorter to fit. It's best to put the back wheel in first, then the front with the bars turned backwards. Also put the front tire on top of the FJ rear wheel well makes it sit nicer. The bike frame will be at a diagonal as it barely fits. Recommend putting a bike glove at the end of the handlebar to protect it from hitting the FJ rear glass. I also put a utility blanket under the bike to prevent any scratches from the bike pedals and as well as keeping mud from getting all over the interior. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have this? It claims to be made for the FJ... bike rack for the hitch. Also claims you can still get the rear door open. sheesh... I am wondering how far the bikes stick out??

I also checked out Thule for hitch mounted bike racks -- I need to figure out what size/ class hitch the FJ has first... mine's at the dealer right now, so I called, and they don't even know, ha!! They actually TOLD me that they don't know much about the FJ... *yikes*!!!

I've fit a spec SX trail in the manner mentioned above. spec SX trail is a somewhat long bike

This is the bike mount that I've designed and built for the FJ. It allows you to carry two bikes in the rear cargo area.
