I have a 1998 Rav4 with 2.0 engine and 173680 miles-several months ago a rattle from the area of the lower right side of timing chain cover developed. The rattle started out only lasting a few seconds after starting the engine but now is louder and last several minutes after starting the engine. The oil lite only stays on a few seconds after starting the engine and as far as I can tell has not changed. The rattle is the same with or without A/C on. Anyone know what might be causing this and is it fatal?

It's been mentioned on the Rav 4 World website that the noise you described is your water pmp about to fail .
It should be change at the same time you do the timing belt .
