Shifting out of park

Shifting out of park was noticably resistant over the last few weeks but today, its very difficult. I can force it out of park and then shifting between the other gears is easy but as soon as I put it back in park it again does not want to shift out. If I push the override button just above the shifter with a screwdriver it agains move out of park. I also noticed that my brake lights don't come on when I push the brake so I checked the fuse and it was blown. I changed out the fuse and it blew again. I took the brake switch light out and replaced the fuse. Its not blowing at this time. I attempted to bypass the switch by connecting terminals 1 and 3 of the brake switch connector but the lights didn't come on. Not sure if I did it right or used the right kind of wire.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Well, I checked out the brake light switch for continuity on an ohm tester and it was fine. I found a decsion tree in the Toyota Lancruiser repair manual and given my symptoms, it indicated that there was likely a short between the brake light switch and the lights. At that point I took it into the dealer and they found that the trailer harness was bad (corroded) and was causing fuses to blow which prevented the car from being shifted out of park. :)
