In a press release Thursday, the car maker, which operates 12 vehicle manufacturing, powertrain, and components facilities in North America, said the milestone marks 20 years of manufacturing in North America, and includes a $16 billion investment in the region's operations.
The company noted it has two more North American plants under construction -- in San Antonio, Texas and Woodstock, Ont.
Toyota, which directly employs 27,000 manufacturing jobs in North America, said that by 2008, it have the annual capacity to build 1.83 million cars and trucks, 1.44 million engines, and 600,000 automatic transmissions in North America.
