twopointfivebar 05-04-2006, 03:15 AM Just curious what's people's approx average KM per tank on a 98-01 gen corolla.
I've been getting really bad fuel economy for the past year, I've racked up 206K, and get about 450KM on a 45L fill up. And this is with 1/2 highway driving, and 1/2 city driving. I dont even push it that much either.
I've already changed my spark plugs, I have yet to change the wires.
Clean air filter, regular oil changes every 4-5K, additives, whatelse is there?
Ghost 05-04-2006, 10:14 AM that is what i get too on a 2000 corolla, i don't think that it is a problem.......maybe when the weather gets warmer you'll get better fuel economy.......
twopointfivebar 05-04-2006, 01:07 PM Really? Thats odd, ... my brother's civic si gets 500KM and he still has about 1/3 of the tank left. My buddy's 2.5RS impreza gets 550-600KM on a 50L fill up. How can the corolla be so bad in gas?
rated_w 05-05-2006, 05:31 PM I avg about 610-650 km depending on my driving..
but I drive slower than my grandma
stubborn1 05-06-2006, 07:42 PM Doing some quick metric conversions (damn the imperial measuring system), I come up with about 600km on a 45L fill in my 98. I have a 5sp manual and drive about 80% on highway so I usually do pretty decent on fuel.
I had a plug wire go bad around 160k, so it probably wouldn't hurt to replace them.
stuts 05-06-2006, 07:47 PM Hey twopointfivebar sorry to hear about the bad gas mileage :thumbdown my suggestion is take it to a Toyota dealer get it checked out  also check your tire pressure  that could for sure be part of it  please keep us up to date on what happened:smokin:
REN69 05-06-2006, 08:49 PM JEEZZ!! what's with the tiny font!! :wowza:
when I used to travel from Oshawa to Mississauga daily (150km a day, 750km a week) I would basically average about 500km a tank.. that was doing 125-140km/h constantly, I would do like maybe 10-15km in town a week, then the rest was all highway, I think my tanks are 40-45L tanks also. 4AGE though, not 1ZZFE like your car.
stuts 05-06-2006, 08:58 PM Ya sorry about that ren69 :hammer: I have to say I am very surprised that the 98/01 Corolla does not get better Gas Mileage than 500 a tank :thumbdown I know the new Corollas get more than that  what was the Canadian EPA rating for 98/01 Corollas
twopointfivebar 05-08-2006, 02:35 AM Ya sorry about that ren69 :hammer: I have to say I am very surprised that the 98/01 Corolla does not get better Gas Mileage than 500 a tank :thumbdown I know the new Corollas get more than that  what was the Canadian EPA rating for 98/01 Corollas
I haven't brought it into the dealer yet, cause they charge an arm and a leg for anything.
My tires are set to 32psi at all four courners.
I did a little research regarding the EPA rating and it turns out that the mpg rating is 28 city, and 36 hwy, or 8.4L/100km city and 6.5L/100km hwy.
Just this week, I filled up 46L and travelled 455KM, and this week was mainly hwy driving. My damn Corolla is guzzling more fuel than my sister's '00 V6 Mustang.
REN69 05-08-2006, 04:06 AM Have you checked your catalytic converter or your O2 sensor? this could be a problem too.. my fuel economy improved once I put a new cat.. I think I need a new one on my 90 GTS now as my fuel economy is bad! and on premium gas too! :wowza:
i actually get better gas mileage when city driving, dunno why, probably cuz i keep it under 2,500 rpms when driving in the city, and i never hit 5th gear as much because of the mph zones, but on the highway, my rpm is at 3k at around 70-75 mph and i waste more gas that way than i do driving in the city
stuts 05-08-2006, 02:39 PM Ya so twopointfivebar I am assuming you have a 50 liter tank (or is it a 45 liter tank  ) on your Corolla  so I did some calculations with the information you gave me on your last post  you should be getting close to 760km a tank with a 50 liter tank :whatwhat: at least in the 700s  so you definitely have a problem :sosad: did you ever get that much on this Corolla in the 700s that is  I hear ya with bringing it in to the dealer but some times you just have to suck it up  depending on how much it bothers you of course
^LMAO, the amount of smilies you use in your posts,,...lol,
^^gotta express your feelings somehow..
anyways my 99 gets some pretty crappy gas mileage too. I dont really have a number for you, but it sucks. But, I havent changed my air filter in the longest time. hehe and I've been rocking the same spark plugs for a longer time. I'm poor so maintenance will have to wait. plus, the family wants the car out.
twopointfivebar 05-09-2006, 02:07 AM 750Km!? thats nuts! I used to get 600-650 when it was new back in the day. Maybe you guys are right, I should change the cat, ... haven't changed it since I got the car, it has 206K.
Now, if I do change the cat, what should I go with? OEM/OE replacement or those aftermarket ones that states it has high-flow and saves gas found on eBay?
stuts 05-09-2006, 10:10 AM So you never did get 700 eh twopointfivebar :thumbdown hhhhhhmmmmmmm I know that is the same calculation I did with my 07 Yaris :naughty: and I am starting to get closer to that 700 mark  in the Yaris forum a guy has got 773km on a tank and it was a automatic so ya I am pritty sure my calculations are right anyways hope your gas mileage improves

Well, maybe my car always had an issue with gas milage since the begining but I just never calculated it out or really noticed it until recently. I bought it at 26K and it was a previous rental. For sure it was probably driven the crap out of it.
Ghost 05-10-2006, 08:56 AM I cleaned my MAF sensor last week, good news, today i got 559km out of a fuel tank in both city/hwy driving..........Funny how even the small things make the biggest difference!

Too bad the 99 doesn't have a MAF sensor to clean. :headbang: I get 9-10L/100km almost always. I am expecting 8.
