Improvements to MPG

I am a long time Toyota owner, but first time Land Cruiser owner. I absolutely love my Land Cruiser, however, the trips to the gas station happen much more frequently than they did with my 4Runner.

I am considering purchasing an after market muffler, and/or air filter to improve my fuel efficiency. Has anyone tried this on their LC? Any other suggestions?

my dad has a 91 lc and has put a K&N airfilter on his i'm not sure if it helped though. he also put headers on it, got a giant jacobs ignition coil, and a few other things i think. he now gets like 15-16 mpg he's actually gotten like 320 miles on the tripometer from one tank of gas. my friend has a 67 ford pickup that he converted to propane. it gets like 13 mpg but it's a lot cheaper than gas. although i'm not too sure how you could do that on a fuel injected engine very easily.

Thanks for the info. The LC in question is a '99. Interested to know if anyone has modified that engine ('98 or newer and acheived improved MPG performance).

Also, the owner's manual indicates premium only. I've always pumped 85 octane into my vehicles and haven't experienced any problems. Anyone know if the premium does anything for you in this vehicle?

i would guess the ECU retards timing enough for you not to notice pinging or other troubles...resulting in less power and mileage. fill up 2 or 3 tanks of premium and see if it makes a difference, its only a few bucks different overall.

i also have the same question, inexpensive ways to improve mileage? mine is a 2000 and its always gotten premium. right now i think its getting about 12 mpg or so.

a tune up may help improve gas mileage.

Tune up will help for sure as will better flow in/out ie. air filter & headers. If you don't have manual locking front hubs going to those would help on mileage as well as reducing undue wear when you don't need the 4 wheel.
