RAV4EVR 09-18-2006, 12:58 PM ................. and "some" people still think TOYOTA can be stopped..... :disappoin ... :D

DETROIT Detroit is running low on optimism.
Despite insisting all year that they had solutions to their financial struggles well in hand, both Ford Motor and Chrysler Group have conceded that the steps they had taken were not working and that more bad news was in store for a city rocked by one of the deepest auto industry crises in its history.
I am so sorry.. FORD... :sosad:
Ford, which has held second place behind General Motors for 70 years, admitted for the first time that it would inevitably be ceding that spot to Toyota Motor because of slumping sales and its decision Friday to close more factories and cut thousands of additional jobs
Avalonman 09-18-2006, 01:10 PM Aww... Tear Tear... Hey, whens Toyota's next celebration?
ECHOKnight2000 09-18-2006, 01:50 PM I thought Toyota was second largests auto maker in the world already? Or are they talking about in the U.S.? Good for Toyota but hopefully it will not effect their quality and reliability...I'm more concerned about that than being number one...but at the same time I'm very happy and its good that Toyota's are selling!

Echo.. Recalls is not a reflection of long term reliability. TOYOTAs age gracefully. Others can only dream of it. Let the "haters" dispute that but that is why they are the "haters"...
................ so don't worry... There is nothing to worry about. As far as recalls are concerned, Toyota is already taking steps to reduce those.
Avalonman 09-18-2006, 03:27 PM This is wonderful!!

Indeed. I couldn't care less if they're number one or not. They're a fairly large company which is enough for me since that means they have the funds to research on expensive projects such as hybrids and fuel cell. I do hope they can improve the quality on their vehicle. Call me picky but I seems to have dropped slightly (and I'm not referring to the recalls). I was looking at this Gen 3 Camry and noticed how tight the gap was between the bootlid (trunklid) and the body. It looks tighter than our gen 5 Camry.

May be the Gen 3 Camry was redone at a body shop and the parts are never put back in the same way.....
Tighter gap means better quality?
There may be other reasons... i.e... safety.... how the metals will bend in the case of an accident... a lot of things are considered when a car is put together....
SILVERadoTACOMA 09-19-2006, 09:16 AM Tighter gap means better quality?
Actually..... yes it does :D

what he said.
Take a look at an LS and then take a look at a Yaris, you will see the difference in body panel gap.
Or just compare a Toyota to a Nissan :P
repinS 09-19-2006, 12:39 PM Is any of this news?

No... :D
Just newer article... :D
91MR2quickNA 09-19-2006, 04:10 PM Mr. Watanabe needs to stop cost cutting. They're at the limit of parts affordability and reliability right now, and it's showing. Parts are failing for no apparent reasons. Toyota's transmissions are absolutely horrendous. My Tacoma is struggling with poor and erratic shifting.
Tideland Prius 09-19-2006, 04:55 PM You have to admit, it's somewhat of a coincidence. I mean, it IS a new transmission. I don't think it's the same one as on the 05+ LS.
My tranny is fine...but it was designed back in 2001

The biggest problems I have seen from Toyota's automatic transmissions is that they are more often to glitch, same has been found on Honda. Avalon's hesitant transmission has been noted. Major transmission failures is where I see the domestics have more trouble in, interestingly enough there aren't many reports of glitches. I have noticed the cost cutting in some parts ever since 1997, most commonly dead headlights on 4th Generation Camrys and 8th Generation Corollas when they were new.
91MR2quickNA 09-21-2006, 03:06 PM The 6th gen Camry's 6-speed automatic is also failing due to a snap ring issue or something. Supposedly, Toyota has changed transmission suppliers. Still doesn't help those that are currently without transmissions because they're on backorder. :disappoin

Would they not need to make a new transmission design to cut costs? By making a new one, one would think that it would be possible to give cut costing a higher priority than everything else (e.g. quality).
By the way, does the new 2007 Avalon have any transmission problems (i.e. did they fix the software bug and not introduce any new problems)? My mother is planning on buying one in January but the possibility of it having transmission problems because of cost cutting is starting to scare me.
Tideland Prius 09-21-2006, 10:22 PM I'm just saying that when designing new things, cost cutting doesn't mean reducing quality. I'm sure there are other reliable ways to reduce cost or maybe other ways of getting a part at a reduced price. All I know is that they shouldn't get overconfident in their record breaking profits. They still have to stick to their principles of offering good quality cars with unsurpassed reliability. It's probably gonna be harder and harder especially with all the electronics which seem to have higher failure rates than good old mechanical stuff. Still, in a world of lowest price = better, I still think quality stands and there will be people willing to pay a slightly higher price if it's a good product.
To be honest, I'm sick of all the cheap stuff. I don't care if it's cheap or not. If it keeps breaking, that to me is more annoying than having to pay more.
