Toyota will unveil a new flagship for the Yaris range at the Paris Motor Show, the Yaris TS. With an emphasis on sporting performance and style, the TS will add an extra dimension to the appeal of the latest generation Yaris, which was only launched at the beginning of this year.

ALL-NEW 1.8-LITRE ENGINE

Key to the TS’s character is an all-new 1.8-litre petrol engine with Dual VVT-i (dual variable valve timing), producing 130bhp (132 DIN hp) at 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 173Nm at 4,400rpm. Working with a five-speed manual gearbox, it gives nought to 62mph acceleration in 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 120mph (194km/h).

The Dual VVT-i is an evolution of Toyota’s intelligent valve timing technology. By varying the timing on both the inlet and exhaust valves, it gives greater engine flexibility, more power and torque and improved fuel efficiency. The TS has a combined cycle consumption figure of 37.7mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 178g/km.

SPORTS CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION

The strong Yaris platform has been further adapted to give the TS handling to match its increased power and performance. Modifications to the suspension and steering increase driving pleasure, without compromising refinement.

To improve body and suspension rigidity, the front suspension members have been reinforced and a linking rod has been introduced between the rear members. Lowering the suspension by 8mm gives the TS a more sporting appearance and retuning the springs and shock absorbers increases stability at speed. Adjustments to the front springs and the use of a thicker anti-roll bar reduce body roll and improve high speed cornering performance.

The electric power steering has also been sharpened to a 13.2:1 ratio, giving lock-to-lock in 2.3 turns, compared with14.2:1 and 3.0 turns for the standard Yaris.

SPORTS STYLING

The TS benefits from a number of exclusive styling features that mark out its sporting character. At the front it has a black mesh grille with a clear TS badge, darkened headlamp surrounds and a deeper bumper with integrated fog lights.

The rear bumper has also been redesigned, with an integrated chrome-finished sports exhaust tailpipe and fog lights. The rear lamp clusters adopt an LED-style design.

Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard and the body gains deep side skirts and a roof spoiler. The choice of paint finishes will include a shade exclusive to the TS, Alsace Granite. Inside, the car is fitted with sports seats, with alloy trim detailing, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and exclusive amber backlighting for the main controls.

Following its Paris premiere on 28 September, the new TS is scheduled to reach UK showrooms in February 2007, available in both three and five-door versions.

Nice.

I love the 1.8 litre engine. 1.8 in this Yaris will make it fly...

I had heard rumors that they may not have 1.8 in the US Corolla starting the next generation. Hopefully that is not true... cuz.. I plan to get one as my third vehicle... The fuel prices are not going back to 99c/gallon ever....

Man.... i LOVE my Echo Hatchback, but if that thing ever comes to Canada, I'm on it...only problem is pricing...my Echo was 20k off the lot.... an XRS corolla was like 30k.... how much is a 1.8 litre yaris going to be???

0-60 in 9.3 is kinda slow, especially for a 5speed manual. The Corolla with a slushbox and with higher curb weight outruns it.

I could probably get better times on my Matrix...and its 200 lbs more. What gives?

The final drive ratio on the C50 is 3.722, which isn't sporty at all. The gearing is closely matched, but the FD spaces it out a little more, so it hurts acceleration. If you slap in a C56 or even a C60, you'd get better 0-60mph times.

So, the 2ZR-FE has officially hit the market. It's coming to the U.S. soon with the new redesigned Corolla.

Damn those Yaris are so sweet. We have them here in Belize, and there a a few nice modded ones around.

Personally, I'd prefer the more relaxed gearing for the streets. Off the light drag racing might suffer, but on-the-go performance will still be there. The fact that you don't need to make the engine scream to carve through traffic while still maintaining high fuel consumption is huge plus.

Everything is better overseas because people are willing to pay the extras overseas. North Americans tend to be cheap. The always want the most of their money. So manufactures find ways to make the car cheaper. Yeah the dash looks nice. it doesn't have the cut out for the 2din radio that we have here.

Yup I see it, and it sucks just like our Yaris's dash sucks. Toyota should learn where the damn gauges belong, behind the steering wheel.

Also going along with what you said the Yaris is positioned in N/A as a entry level car and to get it that way they had to strip it (to make a profit on a already low profit margin car and to be cost effective), at least from my understanding. Where's in Europe small cars rule and premium sub-compacts and compacts are the name of the game...if we start getting that stuff over here people will start bitching about how we have to pay around or above 20k for a "sub-compact." Besides the Corolla although not a "sub" compact its positioned in this market (U.S.) as a premium compact. But as time goes on Toyota might start to add stuff to the Yaris. We'll see!

You know, gauges never used to be behind the wheel. They were also at the centre

I don't like the centre dash much...but I don't mind it either...guess what I am saying is that would not deter me from buying the car. The reasoning behind this is that they could sell the same car all over the world, be it left or right hand drive...easy manufacturing change.

Yeah, I feel you on that one. My MR2 screams on the freeway and I hate it. The very close gears means I'm in 4th gear by 40mph, so there's a lot of shifting in the city. My V6 MR2 will rev at about 3000rpm at 80mph, which is much more acceptable to me. The wide torque curve is also a huge plus. :D The C50 should be a good match for a fuel sipping psuedo performance Yaris.
