yeah seriously are they giving up? it makes me sad how we only have the tc to go to, to actually have a sports car. unless you want to say a corolla xrs is a sports car. :)!

The Supra/Supra replacement IS coming.

Toyota of North America has been asking Japan for several years for a Supra replacement and it is finally coming around 2008-09. The Celica as good a car as it was would have been kill by the tC, so Toyota saw the writing on the wall and pulled it. And the Solara shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as "sports car". That does not mean that the Solara is not a nice car, but it is no sports car. The Solara is more Touring Car.

i wont believe the story about the supra yet as it's only a rumor right now..it may not even be true..imo, a true celica would be rwd..i believe that's where it's true traits are, NOT fwd..tC is okay, imo not a sport car...i mean it's almost as slow as the solara...gez..

but let's all hold our breath and hope that toyota brings back 2-3 sports cars...;)

I'd like to remind you Americans that you have it easy

Canada does not allow the sale or importation of any Scion tCs
We have no Celicas either
no Supras, we have Solaras but I see them more as supped up family/lux cars

I love the first Gen Solara, but i don't consider it a sports car either. Very classy car though.
Back to topic. I think in today's world people would much rather have a car that supports a sporty look, rather than buy a sports car. In all honesty i don't think there is a large percentage of people who are performance fanatics.

Why does this come up so often?
Why do people not understand that barring... The Mustang, Vetta & Miata. About no other sports cars have about ever been profitable for a "normal" company to make.
Why don't they understand that sports cars are image cars. They don't make money. If they did, the world would be full of sports cars...

Understand... From an OEM & sales standpoint... Sports cars freaking suck. About they only thing they're good for is styling, then styling the rest of your line to suite. & on the chance people think it's ugly, or sucks hind tit. You're pony'ing tens of thousands of cars & very little profit out the tube instead of hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of sales out the window if you screw your main production car.

Going along with what others said, sports cars are not profitable, well most of them...the Celica, MR2 Spyder were great sellers at first, but then sales declined and Toyota felt it should pull the plug. Remember Toyota is first and foremost a BUISNESS! They are in it for the money, and if a product doesn't net that or at least good enough to justify the production costs, its axed. Not to say image doesn't play a part in sales but that can go only so far...Also I think Scion has somewhat of a part in this, back in 03 to 04 it was just starting and a big deal. Then in 04 when it went nation wide it caught on like wild fire so that kind of eclipses the Celica and MR2, I'm not saying Scions are sports cars but the point is they were/are "youthfull" spunky cars with great value, not to say the Celica and MR2 was either but they didn't come down in bargin pricing like the Scions. But also the hype kind of killed the Celica and MR2, just my observation, obviously there were other factors involved.

Since I mentioned Scion obviously I'm just talking about the U.S.

Maybe some of us could afford to get one of these expensive sports cars came out. Toyota do seem to be giving up on sports cars and if they give them to lexus then they will be too expensive. The new supra looks to be a great car if they make it

While "most" sports/performance cars aren't necessarily profitable, I do think they can be an important piece of a manufacturer's lineup. The hot new sports cars get people in the door to sell more of the bread and butter cars. It's good to give your enthusiasts some bragging rights too.

Heck, sometimes you don't even need a different model to accomplish this. For example, the Hemi and SRT-8 300s and Chargers get the blood pumping, but they are more or less window dressing for the important V6 family models.

to me i don't just look at Toyota, i look at Scion, Toyota and Lexus togeather i think the people in charge of all this are making Toyota'a for the "daddy's car" crowd keeping them boring and mundane now you look at Lexus there making luxury/sporty cars problems the pricy sticker price. Now we have Scion i think there just too new to the table, given a few years and some dealers in Canada we might just have something.

Unless I am a millionare, I would rather put those 20/30k towards something I am going to USE not store for DECORATION, top of the line INSULATION for my roof, my son's college fund or my 401k plan or atleast have a nice savings account for a rainy day.

Hell I gave up my 6 speed manual FJ Cruiser plan for three row of seats in a Sequoia ( I do love the Sequoia BTW, although auto transmission).
I don't think I can ever consider a sports car. Although if I win a lottery, I will buy a Supra for looks and park it.

Does that DISQUALIFY me from the auto enthusiasts club???

Is it the 8% of the population that must have a sports car?

Yeah, the Skyline is pretty bad ass, one my favorite Japanese sports cars and one of my favorites period! Nissan will have the 350Z and Skyline, Toyota needs at least one performance car! I think the Lexus Supercar that is coming out is suppose to compete with the Skyline (I beleive they are similar horsepower specs, all speculative of course).

Toyota has its priorities elsewhere right now. It is no ones fault but Toyota that the Supra, Celica, & MR2 Spyder are not being sold anymore. Toyota sold each vehicle for 6 years with minimal redesign. They chose not to invest in redesign.
Each had a major design flaw.

The Supra was overpriced.
The Celica GT-S was underpowered, even with TRD parts it never exceed 190 horsepower.
The MR2 Spyder had no trunk, the Miata did.

At under $22,000 the SUPERCHARGED Scon tC is a better value with a better powerband.

Also the Supra will come with the IS350 V6 with more than 300 horsepower.
There will be a turbo or V8 version.
YOU WILL SEE THE NEW SUPRA BEFORE THE END OF 2008.:)

I loved the 80s boxy designs and music ofcourse :D. When a new car came out, it stood out... :disappoin

Now, thanks to computers, the design limits have been tested. U can't tell a 1995 from a 2005 unless you know the car or if the car is rusted out or in a bad shape.

i doubt toyota has given up on their sports cars, just forgot how to make them. take the corolla xrs...dont get me wrong, thats a pretty fun car to drive, but you cant just drop an engine and expect it to sell like pancakes. matrix xrs, another fun car to drive but overall nothing spectac. they need to look at the classics and determine how the cars got that status..from beautiful lines and power of the supra..agility of the ae86...big punch from celica all trac...to the baby ferrari mr2 turbo. the way they engineer their so called "sports cars" is pathetic.

Yeah right...

It seems like "dropping an engine" to you since you know very little about the car and are most likely making uneducated guesses. From rims to summer michelin tires, suspension, interior layout, brakes, X-brace and Yamaha strut brace, sway bars there are lots of differences between other Corollas and XRS. I should knows since owned both an 04 S and 05 XRS. It is obvious from the out-of-the-factory 0.85g tested skidpad acceleration and 67 mph slalom speed of the XRS. Higher than most Toyota/Lexus/Scion that came out lately. The reason why XRS was discontined was because 90% of the market buys automatic transmission and XRS had only 6 speed manual with a 4.53 final drive ratio available. Being unbiased, ask any non-Toyota owner, Corollas have an image of bland cars, frugal, point A to B and not a youthful brand like Honda or Nissan. Pick up the age demographics and you will see the overall average Toyota buyer is much older than that of the average Nissan, Mazda or Honda buyer. The XRunner is facing the same dilemma and will be axed soon.

Trying to stay realistic and unbiased because I am Toyota owner, Honda and Mazda are in the same situation where S2000, RSX Type S, Civic Si, Mazdaspeed3 and 6, all fabulous driving experience are not selling more than a handful and not make much profit (if any). The difference is, Honda and Mazda are willing and cares about their brand image to go the distance of caring for the same and loyal less than 10% customer base. For this reason, there are only 250 Mazdaspeed 3 being imported into Canada this year and it is one hell of an awesome car.

Recently, many critics have been bashing Lexus for the IS350 after the arrival of BMW 335 Twin Turbo and the all-new G35 sedan. For the same price, apart from high build quality, similar HP on paper, IS350 just falls pail in front of these cars that offer superior driving experience. C & D in the latest edition said "why in the world would you want to drive an IS350?" . Toyota on the other hand, is driven by net profits, growth, building only cars that selling to the largest target customer base, has been axing all sporty cars since the do not generate any profits and cost more to build. The greatest Toyota Supra was axed for the same reason because the sales volume did not justify it's existence. Why should they really care?? They are making tons of dollars and sales more than anyone else anyway. There is a reason why Toyota's image to the public at large is of a company with high quality, reliability albeit boring and bland cars.
