Transmission help!!! Gen 3

Just bought a '94 Camry SE for my daughter's first car. Everything was fine until this afternoon.

When I got off work and tried to drive home I couldn't get it out of park. The car will start and run fine but no amount of force will move the shifter (auto on the console).

I tried everything I could think of - engaged the park brake, got out and rocked it, pumped the brakes, pushed the ECT button (not really sure what that is) nothing.

Any ideas??? I bought it from a private seller, not a dealer, so I don't have a owner's manual.

Thanks all

Try removing the little black rectangle on the shifter(I believe it's the top left from the shifter) with a flathead screwdriver. Then try moving the shifter out of park.

Is this the "shift release"? I saw a reference to it in another forum but searched the net with no luck. I'll give that a try in the morning.

Thanks!

Yep. It should let you manually move out the shifter, regardless of the brakes being pressed down or not. Hopefully the car will be running fine:)

Isn't there a "shift lock override button" on the shifter? Keep it pressed and move the shifter.

However, this only treats the symptoms. It would be nice to find what makes it stick.

did it do the trick or...is it still stuck?

It's interesting what could cause it to do that.

do your brake light work corectly cause it uses the same switch to allow it to come out of park, could be bad connection..

there also a small computer thing near the shifter that controlls it. if anything i have a extra from my car or you can get one from a junk yard.
