Celica AWD

hey....anyone got details on this car..??

it's a 1988 Toyota Celica Turbo AWD w/ dunno mileage.....black leather.....power sunroof... also 1 year Warr...... $4500.... is it worth buying it???

buy it and expect to dump more money into the car, it may need new ball joints and the turbo also may need to be rebuilt. other than that i cant see that it should have any other issues since its good ol' reliable toyota.

Unfortunately, old Toyota turbocars were only GM or Dodge reliable.
A mechanic at DVNT says that every time he had to pull a motor out to fix it, it was either turbo or supercharged and it cost LOTS!
This included old Turbo Celicas, MR2's, Supras, and Previas. However, the newer models, like 1993 and up were better.
No 2jz-gte's from late model supras had to be pulled, and only one last gen MR2 turbo had to be pulled.

i think trd4runner was referring to the older versions of the 3s-gte. the engine would obviously evolve and become improved over the years....as for the 4agze, i have no clue..i always thought of that as a really nice engine myself.

I guess the problem was that it was either the turbo, or something to do with the turbo, like the intercooler or something are the things that frequently break. And due to their design, the only way to get to them is to yank the engine out. Try replacing a supercharger belt on a Previa!

HAHAHAHA! yea right. anyways, i OWN a celica alltrac st165. i GARUNTEE if you bought it from someone who took care of it, itll be a great car. as for me, i bought mine from a couple who drove it from NJ and MN a few times. they didnt care for the car after it started getting old, and i ended up fixing the things they didnt fix. (cv boots, clutch@120k, exhaust, suspension, etc.) just regular maintenence on a 14yr old car. and for you straight away junkies, i ran a 15.2 on STOCK everything with k&n drop-in and gutted cat. impressive for 14yr old "junk" that someone else wanted to trash.

the reasons why the turbos break first, is because the general driving community dont properly let the engine warm up NOR cool down like it says in the manual. then to make it worse, half of them dont do the regularly scheduled maintenance. even if it was a porsche turbo, if you gave it to the general public, that car would be waste after a few years.

(fyi, the owner wanted $3500 for my car, and i took it for $2000 due to the condition it was in. dont expect to buy a 14yr old car and have it run like its a 5yr old "late gen toyota turbocharged car" ... dUH)

Didn't Wraith (Justin) put a ST165 in his gen 3 Camry and ran 13.89 or something?? How come a lighter car with the same engine is only at 15.2? Am I missing something here?

lighter? i think you *ARE* missing something here. check up on your data. the st165 is a good 3000lbs empty. plus i doubt his 3SGTE was stock. you do the math. :smile:

Gen 3 Camry 4cyl is almost 3100lbs empty. I am not sure about the block weight between a 3S-GTE and 5S-FE but I assume it is negligible.

Maybe he does have a bigger turbo or something. :smile: He did his high 13 run at 2500ft above sea level too... so it could in fact be faster.

I have to jump in here.

Drivetrain loss in a Camry is substantially less than the GT4 Celica. A Camry is fwd, while the gt4 is awd, right? Again, do the math. A lighter car, less drivetrain loss ...

As someone else said, if the car was well-maintained, then it is a killer car! I know, I own one (a 1992). When I bought it at 101k miles, it was leaking oil in the typical places, but hell, I bought a piece of rally history! So, I've been going through it, cleaning things up, and making upgrades. But don't buy any car, especially a turbocharged car, from someone who didn't maintain it well.

Thank you. GT-S?! Hell no! It's the real deal, one of 271 sold in North American in 1992. Full options, leather, System 10 stereo, etc.

88' Celica is that Gen 4?
Think about it, 14yrs of the car!
Is that still has a good condition?
Think about what car you can get by $4500 with the lower year.

actually I go it off the Japanese MR2 turbo ... its a 2nd Gen 3S-GTE pre'Oct of '93... And yes I have a bigger turbo, and 264° Cams and thats about it when it comes to engine work... Other than that I have you basic performance upgrades, i.e. exhaust, intake...
