Toyota has a lot going on at the Melbourne Motor Show this week. In addition to the Aussie debut of the new Corolla (right), a new Super 2000-spec rally car is also on hand, resplendent in red-and-white TRD livery. 2006 Australian Rally Champion Simon Evans and rally team leader Neal Bates were on hand for the presentation of the new racer, which is powered by a 2.0 liter, 255 horsepower normally-aspirated four-cylinder that runs up to the class-mandated 8,500 rpm maximum. It weighs in at around 2500 pounds.
As is the case with other Super 2000 rally cars, electronic aids are prohibited and not present on this new Corolla, which will see its first racing action in June.
255 HP@8500 rpm from only a 2.0 Liter naturally aspirated engine. That is like 128 HP/Liter of displacement.
Pretty amazing to see Toyota is still churning out more super high revving cars .:)

^^Very nice video. I know Toyota has made and still does make AWD vehicals but I wonder if this is a product of aquiring a huge stake in Fuiji Industries which owns Subaru...I wonder if the next gen XRS (hopefully there is one) will have just as much horsepower and awd, that would be nice...

Awesome video. It must be a test mule since the exterior is the current Euro-Corolla T sport hatch (European version of the 2ZZ-GE Corolla). Definitely, it is revving up to 8500 - 9000 rpm through out. Just a testament on how strong the engine internals are to hold the revs that high for such a long period of time.
The transmission I can easily figure has straight cut gears with a sequential manual (with automated clutch) set up.
Will a engne like this make production? Like say 220 HP?

Actually this car uses the 3S-GE engine which has a long history dating back to 1986 in the old celicas. You can probably find this engine (3S-GE BEAMS) in the Altezza R200 with dual vvt-i.;)

I strongly doubt it is a 3S-GE since both the Yamaha engines (3S-GE and 2ZZ-GE) were discontinued last year. Plus 3S-GE is way too heavy of an engine (cast iron block) to keep the weight of the car down. It is supposed to be a new all-aluminum motor.

They use cast iron block to resist heat deformation because as you see in the video, the exhaust is glowing red!!! If you use all aluminum, you might get warping or cracking.;)

I've looked the video. But the video shows testruns of an old (eeuh, i mean current) E12 Corolla hatchback (RunX or whatever you can name it). Not the new model (Auris).
