Hyundai has stolen the Camry's design

Hyundai is making what is to be thier first luxury car and on the outside it looks extremely similar to the Camry. I this is almost an exact clone of the Camry, all they need to do is move the "H" up a bit and it would be identical to the Camry.

Vaguely similar to the Camry, but the roofline is more sloping, and the rear has a very BMW (Bangle-butt) look to it.

The headlight are the only part that really scream "Camry" to me. . .

^I was gonna say - isn't that Hyundai's MO? Offer a similar design to today's top selling cars, but do it cheaper. Kinda like the Wal-mart of the vehicle world (maybe more like Kmart).....

Front and even side profile look directly from the Camry. Rear is a mix of the new BMW's and the current Hyundai Azera.

I thought the Azera was Hyundai's flagship luxury car...I guess they want to top it? Or is this an entirely new luxury brand? So is this replacing or going to be positioned above the Azera? From what I heard the Azera is doing good and its competative among the full-sized sedans. Even if they want to top the Azera I think they are making a mistake putting it under the Hyundai name plate, in otherwords they should make another division, reason is I think it will overlap too much sort of like VW's unsuccessful Pheaton (sp) which was way overpriced for a VW that is, but that's another thread. Anyway I'm confused!

Hey hey hey guys. Before you mouth off on car makers designs that looks similar to others, why don't you try come up with one that's sensible and close to production design yourself?

It's extremely challenging to design one car from scratch without making it look like you did plastic surgery on it from 100 cars out there.

As for me I usually end up having a design that's similar to the G35/350Z with a SC-BMW rear. Like I said, it's challenging, but it's also possible to end up having one unique design.

i agree.

although there's really not much wrong with that because the design of cars are not just for looks but for practicality and safety. so copying a safe and practical design is a heck of a lot better than creating some random design that may not be as good.
and of course theres no need to go into the economics of it all.
I personally like the direction Hyundai is headed in. If anything, they've learned a whole lot more than american manufacturers have learned in the past decade.

Actually im supprised Kia hasnt gotten in trouble for design copying. Most of theyre cars look like direct rip offs.

Doesn't matter. Who gives a shit? Everything is a copy of something. Nothing is original.
I think that art is better looking than I remember the gen 6's art being before introduction in all honesty... Maybe they can follow through.

I dream of a day when Hyundai outsells domestic cars in America.

Even though there is a precident for Hyundai taking others' designs (*cough* ACCORD *cough*), I'd rather wait and see what the real car is going to look like.

While the front fascia/grill sports a striking resemblance to the Camry, remember that this is just a sketch.

^ You guys also got to remember that Design Directors move from car companies to car companies. A Audi Design Director could of come from Porsche. A BMW Designer could of went to Volkswagon. Remember, car designers don't stay in one company forever!

So if you guys are saying that one designer steals from his own design, then I don't know what to say.

Just a question. Is it normal to say that something has been "stolen" when they have merely been copied?

I have seen this word being used a lot when some cars have vague resemblances to each other (which most often is because it's modern to have certain design elements)*, but it sounds quite childish IMO.

*Examples like the Camry should have "stolen" the front of Mazda 6 and that LS430 has "stolen" the "Bangle butt" (often said when the BMW in question actually wasn't even designed by Chris Bangle).

Hahaha... funny stuff. Lexus' cars are known to be copy cats of German cars and it's wrong now because Hyundai appears to be doing the same thing as Toyota has been doing? LOL.

Doesn't matter. Who gives a shit? Everything is a copy of something. Nothing is original.

1989 LExus LS400.........copied same year MB S class.
My 98 GS copied the dual quad headlights from Eclass MB.

Ofcourse I like the Lexus designs better but they did copy the germans.

Where have you been all these years? You should step into reality every once in a while. I do love Toyota/Lexus vehicles but gotta tell how it is instead of denying it. Lexus has been known as a copycat car company mainly being accused of stealing styling cues from MB. Just Google "Lexus" and "copycat" or something similar to that extent and you'll get your info. Yeah, I mean, you can say the same about my bodykit designs but I'll let you know, I design everything from scratch. Yes, you may seem something similar, but I design it because I've never seen such kit before. I also incorporate aerodynamics and downforce on my designs. So of course I might borrow the same aspect designs you see out there. That's because it's functional, but it's different to compare my experience with car designers because it's such a broad market, it's quite difficult to come up with a radical new design that looks nothing like you've seen before. Pinifarina (Ferrari's main design firm) comes up with radical designs that no one seen, but how many designs have you seen from them in the past decade besides the customed Enzo they recently did?

to the kiddies bitching about Hyundai, i'd like to make you aware of something: as time goes on, individuality and creativity is going out the window. it's just like movies and current music - they're rehashing the same stuff because they CAN'T come up with something different without having it cost a shit-ton of money.

at one point, Toyota and Honda looked vaguely similar, as well. car makers - ALL car makers - are trying to go with the trend of what people will buy. as long as it's not such a blatant rip from another brand, they'll be able to sell it.

hell, even if it is, if they're not sued by the originating company they'll probably be able to sell it, too.
