Rediculously low weight for a diesel. Looks like finally someone is putting technology in one instead of simply relying on shear mass to hold one together! Powerband looks amazingly long. A very wide differance (for a diesel) in peak torque, and horsepower figures.
I speculate this is the first seeings of what happened when Toyota bought alot of GM's stake in Isuzu. I *really* want to see what happens when Yamaha get's to run wild with the valvetrain & head design. lmao. 10 years from now we'll have a diesel engine with vvtl-i & intake manifold runner/pleumn trickery lmao!


Anyways... GM might wind up kicking themselves in the ass bigtime down the road from ditching Isuzu stock... btw, for anyone that doesn't know. GM's 300,000 engine/year Duramaxx line = 100% Isuzu...

There must be sth. wrong. A 4.5L turbo diesel v8 produces only 430NM(317lb.ft) of torque?

Oh yea. . . . . 4.5 liter v8 diesel and. . . . . . (wait for it. . . . .) . . . . . 317 ft*lb!!!!!! Now that is some funny stuff!!! Stand back, this technology MONSTER is going to revolutionize the diesel market, for sure. . . .

I see no mention of a Turbo (though I can't remember the last time I've heard of a non-turbo diesel). I see what looks to be an intercooler and some sort of mechanism attached to the intake tract, but it sure doesn’t look like a turbo. Also, not sure what the block is made of, aluminum or cast iron. . . . Oh well, I would like more information on it. . . .

BTW the DuraMax was and a joint venture between GM and Isuzu, called DMAX ltd. GM acquired a majority stake in DMAX in 2003 which included ALL ENGINE DESIGNS. Please explain how GM's majority stake in DMAX Ltd somehow equates to "= 100% Isuzu". . . . .:kookoo:

Lets see the power curves before anyone comes to any conculsions...
317ftlb of torque is low but if it can hold a high amount through the whole powerband it might not be that bad.

^^^Power curve??? It's peak torque is 317 ft*lb. . . . .even if it was a totally flat curve, that still sucks out of a 4.5 liter V8 diesel. . . .

If you compare the technology and specs for the two engines, this V8 sounds archaic compared to the D-CAT. And what about the particle filter? The D-CAT gets the output while using one of the most efficient particle filters on the marked.

This is a detuned version of this engine , the gearbox and diffs are carried over from the 78/79 series lancrusier thats why power and torque figures look low . This engine will be in the Landcrusier replacement this year with 195kw and 620nm of torque. The only reason this engine is appearing in the 70 series is because the 1hd-fte didnt meet euro 4 emissions.The cost for Toyota to design a new driveline for the 70 series just wouldnt make sense , at best they sell about 400 units a month in australia and we are the biggest market for this vehicle . The 70 series is designed mainly for mining and farm enviroments and is as tough as old boots , its not a race car .

I dunno why but I do like the current front end better....and it's more suitable for work/offroading (ie: cheap replacement cost)

but I think the price abit expensive though......aud$54000 (CAD$50000) for a non turbo and aud$57000 (CAD$53000) for a turbo one. (Currently)

I wonder how much if that (facelift??? or new??) version? will it be more expensive that the current one since it have a new V8?

the price will stay pretty much the same . they are bloody pricey but there is nothing else that will do they job they will and they last forever , there are heaps around that are 20yr old with over 400000km still going strong.

Regardless of the torque figures, yea its underpowered for a V8 turbo diesel in the U.S. but maybe fine for the New Zealand market...dont make comments assuming Toyota does not have the skill or ability to make something to lead the market...(becuz they have shown that they can with most of their new engines)
Remember Toyota does not only have this stake in Isuzu but also owns Hino.

There is no mystery as to how a turbo works, or the reason why a turbo engine needs an intercooler. Please don't pretend there is some complex, higher order thinking that needs to be done to understand diesels (or a turbo diesel for that matter). . . .
