kdhspyder 09-17-2007, 01:24 PM According to Edmunds InsideLine reporting on comments made by a Toyota exec....
Toyota had long been known to be interested in launching a diesel-powered Tundra to compete with highly profitable, heavy-duty versions of Detroit Three pickups, but some sources now suggest Toyota may be reassessing those plans. Nonetheless, Toyota says development of a diesel-powered Tundra is "completed."

No other diesels are contemplated now because of the high cost of controlling emissions. GM and Ford have said essentially the same.
mhadden 09-17-2007, 05:37 PM I'm sure the "completed" diesel concept will be the one revealed at SEMA in October.
Corona67 09-17-2007, 07:46 PM Good news; however I agree with the writer that Toyota doesn't want to delve into the diesel market because they want to steer people towards hybrids. I think that would be a major strategic error on their part. I've ridden in a new diesel Jetta & I liked it a lot.

middleoroad 09-17-2007, 11:13 PM If Honda begins to make money in America with the Accord 2.2i-CTDi,Toyota will have to bring their diesel cars also.

I think they want to give the consumer another choice. ppl who buy a hybrid is more like using the truck to hual light weight stuff like tools, some parts and stuff like that which takes room...........but with a diesel truck, itz more like for construction ppl who needs to hual a generator/trailer/drywall etc. around the city.........and also diesel truck is not as friendly as gas truck in winter....... although they will start, it will not be as good to the engine, n not many ppl like to wait for 5mins til the engine is complete warm up......
personally, i will buy the diesel truck, as those hybrid need to get their batteries replace after certain milage, which is expansive.......and i believe it will be a  turbo diesel:heart: ...
mhadden 09-18-2007, 05:49 PM ...not many ppl like to wait for 5mins til the engine is complete warm up.....That is a big problem among diesel owners that "just don't care". Hell, if you watch you neighbors, they literally start there car and before its finished cranking, have it in reverse to get the hell out of dodge...every day! Then they go run the hell out of it....

Diesel would have to be more powerful than that (assuming this is an HD Tundra) to be competitive. There were some early rumours a long time ago Toyota and Hino were together developing a diesel for an HD Tundra and the rumoured specs were 390HP and 700 lb-ft. We will see soon enough what the real specs will be.
Nice to hear though some official Toyota word that a Tundra diesel is coming.

As I recall, no. The rumour was that Toyota was looking at making a class-leading diesel engine, and the rumoured specs were 390HP/700 lb-ft. Those specs would make for a class-leading HD truck at least in engine power.

Seriously. Considering GM's 6.6L Duramax is outputting 365hp/660lb-ft, Toyota will be looking to besting the Big 3 once again in performance figures.
Dodge's 6.7L Cummins is at 325hp/650lb-ft, while 5.9L HO Cummins is 325hp/610lb-ft.
Ford's 6.5L Powerstroke is at 350hp/650lb-ft, and due for replacement very soon. Ford will likely garner the power crown if Toyota has no answer.
Clearly Toyota will have to produce a large displacement diesel motor to really, seriously compete with the Big 3. 390hp/700lb-ft seems like an attainable target for a class leading HD truck.

Dodge's is rated at 350 hp /650 lb-ft. and the duramax is rated at 365 hp.
I agree with u there, of course I wonder if class leading MPG matters as well.

I fixed Dodge's power ratings. For 2007, the 6.7L diesel was updated to run cleaner, and subsequently puts out less HP due to more stringent emissions laws. I also added the 5hp to the Duramax.
with toyota's technology, I think they can produce the same power as the cummin's, n duramax w/ sth like a 4L V8 turbo diesel........or even a diesel hybrid.........

You forget this is Toyota they have something up their sleves.
If they do make a diesesl im sure it will be green friendly and have the Option to run on Biodiesel which is steadily taking up in popularity.
A small company in Denton Texas Makes this Bio Diesel as has a contract with the city of Denton to run all its diesel trucks on Bio diesel. Now there are several big rig companys near that same biodiesel production factory that are being swayed to run moe biodiesel trucks.
So Toyota moving to diesel wont steer from their plan to switch people to alternative Fuels.
Not to mention that they could in fact create a hybrid diesel engine.
Which if you ask me that would be something to see.
In any case no mater what type of Diesel they bring out its comming out with the pure intention to do one thing. Take on and beat the big 3 so it will have something.
Gekko 09-24-2007, 09:47 AM I think the 1VD 4.5l V8 D-4D from the Land Cruiser will not appear in the Tundra. Altrough that engine can be tweaked enough to put out enough power to be competitive, I expect they use a large 4 or 6 cilinder truckdiesel engine from Hino.
mhadden 09-24-2007, 11:57 AM 37 days until we find out!

I strongly doubt that, a 4 or 6 inline engine would be out of the question, they can`t comply with the emissions standards and they are *not* suited for a car, if you have seen these engines you would understand why..
Hino automotive diesel engines.
J05Chttp://www.hino.co.jp/e/02/images/ber1.gifTI: 5,3L/I4 187hp@ 2500rpm / 5395lb-ft @ 1500rpm Weight 450kg

The rest of the lineup is not worth mentioning, they are way to heavy and bloated for a car.
I would be very supprised if something else than the new 1VD engine would show up in the Tundra.
6shooter 09-24-2007, 11:34 PM if toyota really wants to compete, they're going to need to bring a 3/4 ton with a diesel. i know a lot of people who are just waiting for it to hit. ( not me-i'm fine with the tacoma :) )
Gekko 09-25-2007, 01:35 PM Another option is to increase the 1VD size to more then 5 liter, strap two turbochargers on them and high pressure injectors. That should do it.
And in the meantime the should offer the standard 1VD to the Tacoma.
G-meister 09-25-2007, 04:26 PM the twin turbo version of the 1VD was just released for the LC200. It specs at 283hp and 480lb-ft of torque. Not enough to compete with the HD's from Detroit, but should be awesome numbers for a half-ton. With those torque specs and the 6spd auto it could have the same pulling power as the 5.7 (more than any half-ton needs) using just a 3.54 gear. That would deliver really low cruising rpm/decent fuel econ.
