mcgavin 10-01-2007, 05:28 AM Hi all,
1.6 corolla RSI 20V
quick question, my lifters / tapets are making a noise at low revs. tick tick ticking sound. I am told you cannot stop this as they are auto adjusting. Is this true? I dont see that it can be because they give the valve clearance setting in the users manual?
Thanks
kn38ms 10-01-2007, 10:37 AM I have an 04' with the 1.8L (purchased new) 79K miles
Mobile 1 oil changes. Sometimes my lifters sound diesel like.
Took it to 2 dealers. Both said its normal.
If I still have this car @100K miles i will have the lifters adjusted.
Hope that helps.
mcgavin 10-01-2007, 11:45 AM Thanks, that does help, but to confirm, you are saying that the lifters can actually be adjusted then? Contrary to what some people have told me? Is the procedure using a feeler gauge?

yep, feeler guage, flat head, and I belive a 10mm wrench :)
Flashmn 10-01-2007, 01:40 PM What lifters... there are no adjustable lifters in a 20V. You adjust them by shimming the buckets.

Flashmn can you elaberate on what "shimming the buckets" is?
Flashmn 10-01-2007, 01:53 PM Theres shim disks either on top of the bucket (most cases like this) or underneath (usually built in, vitz/echo/yaris) Now you check the clearance with the feeler gauge and then install a shim thats gives you the correct clearance, either buy replacing the shim ontop of the valve bucket or replacing the whole bucket.
mcgavin 10-01-2007, 02:06 PM Oh dear, i was worried it would be like that. that is hydraulic lifters right?
Lets say i check the clearance and one of them is out. how would i go about getting the correct shim to correct the valve clearance measurement.
Just another quick question - why do these lifters/tapets/whatever you call them become noisy if they are adjusted by oil pressure (they are adjusted by oil pressure right?)
Flashmn 10-01-2007, 03:24 PM Nope, they dont have hydraulic lifters.
They are not adjusted by oil.
If one of them is out of spec, then you just take the measurement and then measure the old one and get a new one with the combined measurement. Oh and btw are you sure its valve tick?
mcgavin 10-02-2007, 06:20 AM good question. i cant say that i am certain. the ticking sound is there until about 2500rpm and then disappears at higher revs. thats all i can really tell you that im certain of.
Flashmn 10-02-2007, 06:32 AM and you're sure it comes from the head not the block?
mcgavin 10-02-2007, 09:52 AM yeah that im pretty sure of. the car has a branch which in my experience does make it bit louder (had golf with branch before and it became pretty noisy), but i would really like to fix it cos it is driving me bananas
Flashmn 10-02-2007, 01:17 PM branch? :P
kn38ms 10-02-2007, 01:31 PM You may want to remove your oil filler cap to inspect to see if there is a plate beneath
the hole (where a funnel could rest)under the valve cover to see if it is making contact with a rocker arm.
Flashmn 10-02-2007, 02:30 PM ^ umm. there are NO ROCKER ARMS IN GE'S...
If you read the posts above you would of seen that I said that already.
mcgavin 10-04-2007, 08:50 AM Thanks for the help guys. i took the head cover off yesterday. saw the shims.
By luck, managed to get another complete engine that has done half the mileage for next to nothing. am thinking of using that head instead. maybe it will be less noisy with the less mileage it has done.
I am also doing a compression test on the 4 cylinders this weekend, because the car setup is correct but the power on the dyno is quite low. Does anybody know what kind of compression i should be hoping to see for the RSI 20v?
punter 10-04-2007, 03:44 PM Lifters? Rockers?
Ha, people on this site are so helpful .
If it's definatly coming from the head, What you are hearing is the VVT pulley, they wear out and start ticking.
It not a problem really, they still operate normally just tick at low revs.
It could also be bottom end noise (like one of my 20v's :sosad:)

More like ignorant, probably never taken the valve covers off and just stating what they heard somewhere.
I was asking about bottom end because usually when you rev, the bearing problems on the bottom end stop.

Usually, mine still does but I doubt it will last mush longer.
Pretty much the only way to run bearings on a silvertop is to starve it of oil, so if that hasn't happened it'll be the VVT pulley.

punter 10-08-2007, 04:30 PM Should see between 205 - 210 psi.
Although I have a cheap gauge so that might not be accurate.
As long as they are all within 5% of each other the actual number doesn't mater.
mcgavin 10-09-2007, 02:24 AM Great. Thanks for all the help.
