Valves Ticking?

there is a small ticking sound coming from my motor i am pretty sure its the valve springs or something to do with the that area... is this a major problem that i should worry about or should i just try and baby the motor from now on?

that sounds like valves and uh you might want to fix that 'cause that can lead to much worse things. and even though its fun (i know) running any motor hard will eventually wear it out faster then babying/moderate. oil changes are even moreso important. HAVE to remember to keep everything in there lubricated.

valve adjustment probably...

The 1ZZ-FE engine is already a little loud to begin with, unless you notice a huge drop in performance or drivability then I would not worry about it too much

if your really concerned take the valve cover off an measure your valve clearance's most likely the valves are out of clearance

if they are how would i correct a clearance problem? i've been reluctant to mess with the vvt

VVT is unrelated, clearance is between the cam and valvetrain.

Assuming 1ZZ?
Are they a shim over bucket?

:hammer:I would not mess with it, unless the valves are bad.... If they are very loud.... or the engine misses because of bad valves..

do they sound like sewing machines? or just a slight tapping with the engine is cold? Also if the engine has high mileage, don't just have the valves reone, or it could burn oil, because of a mismatch between worn rings and new valves....


Don't try to adjust them if you have no experience and you could set the clearance and lash too tight...

too loose is better than too tight..

sure they do, if you have lots of wear on rings and worn valves,,, then if you repair the valves, it will pump the oil past the rings at a furious rate (or at least more oil). That's why it's usually not a good idea to do only a valve job if the rings have lots of wear..... Somtimes you can get away with just doing valves, just depends on the wear...

yes, I know he was talking about excessive tapping of the tappets...

sorry, you still didn't understand... if an engine has both wear on rings and valves. and they both leak... or allow leakage of oil and gasses... it is not a good idea to do only a valve job.. and not do the rings.... as that will cause substanial oil pumping past the rings,, as the rings would be a very weak spot in the seal of the combustion chamber...

If it's shim under bucket it's unlikely to be valve noise, unless it's done stupidly high miles or had the head fiddled with.

So true.. tick tick tick.. almost like a pinging sound. :eek:

its an 1zz and the sound isn't really that loud its just kinda like a quite tick with the motor so don't mess with it only if there is a big performance decrease? if then just have it checked...

Does the noise increase/decrease (in speed or volume) with engine speed?

No it doesn't get any louder at all it just gets faster as you rev it
