Toyota Recalls 470,000 Vehicles in Japan

Wednesday October 17, 5:07 am ET

By Yuri Kageyama, AP Business Writer

TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota recalled 470,000 vehicles in Japan Wednesday for engine, steering and motor problems in the latest sign of growing quality problems as the automaker embarks on ambitious global growth.

None of the recalled models were exported, Toyota Motor Corp. said. There were no reports of accidents related to the defects, but more than 300 problems were reported, it said.

Oops! Toyota might as well quit and give up. Just die and let the domestics take over. I know I plan to burn my Toyota at the stake, anyone with me?:lol::lol::thumbup:

Like what we say for every car make or most of us, its good that they are recalling the cars and looking into it. Sure it sucks that its this big but hey better than hidding it under the rug.

The sky is falling! The sky is FALLING!! The sky IS FALLING!!!

Sounds like it must be time for Mr. Toyoda to take a bow, apologize to all past and current Toyota owners worldwide for all the lies that he and his ancestors have told since the original Toyoda vehicles in the 1930s, and announce to GM and Ford, and the rest of the world, that he is closing the Toyota Motor Corporation, effective immediately. The reason for this drastic move, he will say, is because the quality of Toyota vehicles is now so, so, so low that nothing they do can bring its quality up a level that could even match that of the Yugo. "They start falling apart as soon as they roll off the line!"

To save face, he will announce that there will be an immediate recall of ALL Toyota vehicles currently on the roads, worldwide. All current registered Toyota owners will be offered the chance to swap their Toyota for a Ford.

YEAh, seems youre kinda right, because it doesnt affect u directly, but in the end its interesting the huge number of vehicles, and the important parts of the vehicle that have problems, but then again, this and the recent news of toyota slipping in quality in consumer reports maybe together can break little by little toyotas reputation . Heck! at least anti toyotas will have more and more bricks to throw at toyotas roof, even thou they may have a glass roof of their own.

So, I should join the ECHO twins and ban myself for 5 minutes also? I will, after this.

I believe that I may have spoken too soon when I suggested that Mr. Toyoda shut down the company immediately. According to Brendan Moore writing for Autosavant, Toyota has already committed suicide:

"Since you read this blog, you probably already know that Toyota took a shot to the temple yesterday when Consumer Reports stated that the Camry V6 and the Toyota Tundra are now rated below average in reliability, and further, the Lexus GS, an upscale clone of the Camry, was also rated below average. Additionally, this caused Consumer Reports to withdraw their long-standing “recommend” buy rating on all Toyota cars and trucks."
(See the full article at: http://www.autosavant.net/2007/10/toyota-is-not-having-good-time.html) (http://www.autosavant.net/2007/10/toyota-is-not-having-good-time.html)

I now ban myself for 5 minutes for my pro-Toyota antics!

4 wheels, a windscreen... I would say it is a Camry, not just a clone...

Does anyone one know what the exact problems were, apart from "motor, steering and reputation"?

I see it as a double standard. I'm seeing the U.S. media reporting every worldwide Toyota recall and in turn ends up as a discussion in message boards, while GM and Ford global recalls never get reported. GM divisions like Vauxhall, Holden, Opel, Sabb, GM Daewoo, ect have recalls also.

Vauxhall recalls 200,000 'fire risk' Corsas
Ray Massey, Transport Editor, Daily Mail
20 August 2007
Vauxhall is to recall nearly a quarter of a million Corsas because of a fault that can cause them to spontaneously combust.

It follows several cases of owners describing cars bursting into flames on their driveways. An earlier recall failed to remedy the problem - a short-circuit in the anti-locking brake system - and more than 200,000 cars are now to be brought back in for further repairs, beginning next month.

Rosemary Dent, 51, saw her £8,500 Corsa go up in flames on her driveway just after midnight on October 25 last year after celebrating her birthday at a local restaurant. The blaze spread to her husband Neil's £15,000 Saab 9-5, which was also parked on the driveway.

Could you imagine the discussions on message boards if these were Toyota's catching fire? And recalls like this pass without the US media reporting.

How is the GS a clone of the Camry?

They most likely meant ES. The GS is more closely related to the Crown series than any other, as they share the same chassis (GRS/UZS/URS). In other words, it has no equal in the American market.

The cost cutting at Toyota has gotten out of hand. Remember when they used to overbuild engines (3SG[T], VZ, JZ, UZ)? The interior materials have also become second rate.

I thought the Lexus model that had its recommendation revoked was the GS with AWD, not the ES? (And the ES is not available with AWD, is it?) So, the article would be correct regarding the model, but incorrect that it is not a clone of the Camry.

That leads to a question: Is the ES350 a recommended model? It has a similar drivetrain to the Camry V6 that is no longer recommended. If the ES is recommended but the Camry V6 is not, would that be proof of problems with US-assembled Camrys?

About being flamed, maybe it is the occupation?!? But, hey, it is nice to be recognized! :D

Toyota sees the big three are just waking up and must try to get as much momentum going themselves before Detroit gets rolling. Some called it vehicle dumping, but Toyota has done everything they can to increase sales in the last year (successfully) and lowering costs is an important tool.I originally was drawn to Toyota because of their simplicity(same four cylinder in Corona, truck and Celica in the Seventies and Eighties for example)Toyota does four cylinders very well and these are the future of engines.Toyota should look more to their roots to remain reliable and profitable.

Here's the official word:

The V6 version of the company's top-selling Camry, and the four-wheel-drive V8 version of the Tundra pickup, both redesigned for 2007, now rate below average in Consumer Reports' predicted reliability rating. (This rating does not apply to previous model years.) In addition, the all-wheel-drive version of the Lexus GS sedan also received a below average rating. Because Consumer Reports does not recommend models with below-average reliability, these models no longer make CR's "Recommended" list.

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/10/car-reliability.html

The GS AWD had issues issues with power accessories and annoying squeaks and rattles.

Many of the customers that complained about sludge probably drove their 250hp plus engine at very low speeds.

It would be indeed strange because the biggest issue CR had with the V6 Camry was its transmission. The ES I believe uses that exact transmission.

The U.S. based Camry V6 uses a U.S. based supplier for the U660E; the ES350 does not as it is still built in Japan. But yes, they do use the same U660E, just from different sources. That makes all the difference it seems.

BUT, people have reported problems with the ES350's transmission as well. It was a design flaw like Lentz said.

Is there a serious problem with the Toyota brand that all you loyalists know about by won't admit? Recalls are just business, although some are more notable than others, but a lot of you guys are taking it like this recall questions the credibility of the brand, and makes you uncomfortable... and who am I to disagree with all your gut feelings of brand insecurity? :ugh3:

hey... PG's back from the BMW forums!

It's not us but apparently others that love to take the recalls as questionable towards the "credibility" (as you said) of the brand.

It's all about perception. If GM has another recall, it's not the end of the world cause, well it always has recalls. I mean it's good that they're trying to fix things but it's just better if the problems were caught before the cars leave the factory.

That leads to Toyota which has a system that does catches problems before it leaves the factory. Thus, when Toyota has a recall, it's a big deal; not just to you guys but to us too.
