It's big - inside and out. Toyota's Tundra Dually Diesel CrewMax has arrived at SEMA with an 8.0-liter I6 Hino oil burner under its hood.
The press kit for the Tundra Dually Diesel will be published tomorrow, but preliminary info on the Hino motor is that it’s bone stock, with power ratings of 220-horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. Gears are swapped using an Allison 5-speed manual transmission.

There had been some rumor this truck might debut with a Caterpillar diesel, but Toyota made the decision to stay within the family. Hino is a member of the Toyota Group of companies.
Brian Smith, Toyota's corporate marketing manager, says, "The Tundra Dually Diesel is a concept in true SEMA tradition. It’s meant to show off the wilder side of our trucks."

And showing off that wilder side means this Tundra has driven past the heavy duty segment. It also uses Hino rear running gear and brakes, swiped off Hino’s medium duty chassis trucks.
Toyota may have secret plans to enter the heavy duty segment in the next few years, but if it does we're betting that future Tundra HD won't be setup anywhere like this one-of-a-kind hauler.

Inside is a custom leather interior and the biggest stick shift this side of a semi. If that tall stick isn't enough to prompt the driver they're in something beyond Class 3, the instrument panel also helps. The tach goes red at only 2,600 rpm. There's also Tekonsha electronic brake controllers integrated in the dash.

Outside, the custom tow mirrors and front bumper are brushed steel and the skin has been painted with a matte gray finish. It rides on 22-inch wheels. Open the doors and running boards automatically deploy from under the cab.

The bed houses a 24K-pound fifth wheel hitch and preliminary information suggests that this truck is rated to tow that same amount. We'll confirm tomorrow after Toyota gives the official word.

The Tundra Dually Diesel was custom built for SEMA by Toyota Motorsports Garage in Torrance, California.

OMG! Sheer beauty! Inside and out! Under the hood! SEXY! Wonder with that stiff suspension if the tailgate will bounce off..?

Looks a lot better than that red HD we saw recently. This one looks pretty good, the wheels seem a little large and the dually fenders don't look to bad. I do not like GM duallys since they started integrating the fenders in the bed, which is what this one looks like it's doing, but somehow looks good.

No, no. The instant torque from the diesel will cause it to unlatch itself and fly into someone's windshield.

Why is redline at 2,600?

Diesel engines run at very low speeds.

I think some front fender flares would finish off a great looking 1 ton rig. But i don't like that kink in the rear fenders where the tailight meets. Its annoyingly visible.

That is the sexiest heavy duty dually diesel I have ever seen. Which company can boast a work truck like that with a luxury interior? haha 2600 RPM! Beautiful. :D

I know 2 people who have standing agreements for the first Diesels should Toyota make them. My father's one of them.

Looks like Ford and Chevy have more competition now. I guess trucks won't be their best seller for long anymore. :D

This truck looks ready for production...MAKE IT!!

Actually the reality is just the opposite, and this truck might be saying a lot about how seriously Toyota is, or isn't, looking at getting into the HD truck market.

Nothing significant about this truck is 'production ready'. They took the engine, suspension, and numerous other bits out of a medium duty Hino truck and stuck them under a Tundra with a one off dually bed. That is great for creating SEMA show trucks on a budget, but it in no way shape or form has anything to do with a producable HD pickup.

Frankly I'm a bit surprised.

Yeah so whats the problem?

What I meant was it LOOKS like it could be made easily into a REAL truck, not some concept at SEMA...not the usual wild concept.

the hino parts aren't that wild either. the hino bin isn't exactly a high-priced parts bin.

Yeah so whats the problem?

What I meant was it LOOKS like it could be made easily into a REAL truck, not some concept at SEMA...not the usual wild concept.

The problem is that this truck shows no signs whatsoever of any serious devlopment of a production model. Most companies teasers, including those built by Toyota, show some signs of what can be expected under the skin if a production project is underway already. The body itself looks plenty production ready, but that is relatively easy to accomplish and tells us nothing about production possibilites. Everything else is typical, one-off, SEMA fare.

This truck doesn't say Toyota wont build a HD Tundra but it goes a long way toward saying that they aren't seriously developing one right now. This is a fishing expedition pure and simple. And while there is nothing wrong with that rumours have indicated that Toyota is currently developing a production model and not simply conducting reseach into the viability of doing so which this truck would lead one to believe.

The Hino parts aren't that wild either. The Hino bin isn't exactly a high-priced parts bin. Price isn't the issue, suitability is. The only added part in this truck that is believable even as a basis for a production part is the powerplant, and even that is unlikely. The rest of the mechanicals, with the exception of the "we found something that fits' transmission, is pure SEMA fantasy material. Again, there is nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't do anything to boister the argument that a HD Tundra program is already seriously underway.

Whether Toyota's serious about making a HD Tundra or not, making and showing this one-off concept is a way to gauge the public's interest. Every automaker does the same
