CRN PHEV Field Report Update

June 12, 2008
On June 7, 2008, the converted Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) owned by Central Electric Power Cooperative in Columbia, SC, was destroyed by an internal fire that occurred during a routine drive. Thankfully, there were no injuries. But the converted Prius was destroyed. The cause of the fire is not known.

Until further investigation, CRN has advised grounding all test vehicles in the PHEV demonstration and is undertaking a detailed investigation. The limited information available is as follows:

The car was a 2008 Toyota Prius outfitted with the Hybrids-Plus PHEV15 conversion kit.
There was no data logger installed.
The vehicle had previously experienced minor mechanical issues relating to the charger.
The fire occurred during routine highway driving. The upholstery in the back seat had caught on fire. The driver pulled over, exited the car, and there was a subsequent explosion.
The A123 lithium-ion battery was damaged but remained largely intact and functioning. CRN has taken the following actions. It has employed Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation (ETEC) of Phoenix, AZ, to perform an initial investigation on the PHEV. This firm has come highly recommended due to its experience with failure analysis and electric cars. The firm will work to determine the cause of the fire and make recommendations if more specialized forensics experts are needed to complete the investigation.

Doesn't appear to be a battery issue.

This one is just for you Cheesehead ;).

Yes, even the guys at GMInsideNews agree this is a leap to call this "Toyota's" problem. A 3rd party heavily modified a Prius, and it caught on fire.

This is like that idiot that thought posting about some off road guys using a GM engine because they thought it was more reliable was a newsworthy take on Toyota.

Wow some company modded and blew up a Prius.

Yeah, kinda like that idiot that always posts negative GM crap on a Toyota forum as if it were a newsworthy take on Toyota.

I post in general discussion. Not Toyota news. Unless its a NEWS story from a NEWSPAPER or NEWS SERVICE that mentions Toyota the company. Then I'll post it in TOYOTA NEWS.

Pretty soon you'll be posting local accident reports if someone smashed up their Tundra in bumfuck Minnesota. It said "toyota" in the story.. right? Must be Toyota news.

Oh BTW forgot you were the guy who posted the gm engine thing. Thought it was some other idiot.

You can't make this stuff up. Ya know what's really really funny about this goofy piece and the fact that all the GMers are all over it with the name 'Toyota' involved?

A123 is the current leader to be GM's battery supplier for the Volt. Shocking ( horrible pun ). "Buy a Volt, get fried by A123?"

Enough mud.. Stupid article.

Well kdh, if you had actually READ the article, you would know that the A123 battery was not the cause of the fire. In fact, it only sustained minor damage from it and was still functional. ;)

There was little damage to the A123-manufactured lithium-ion battery pack which suggests that some other hybrid component could have been the cause of the fire and subsequent explosion -- this could be somewhat of a relief to many who still express reservations with regards to installing numerous lithium-ion cells in passenger vehicles.

Ya, this is bogus to say that Toyota sucks because somebody outside did this. I'm pretty excited to see what the new, Toyota-manufactured, plug in Prius will do, see if it takes off.
