Tideland Prius 07-01-2008, 07:11 PM I find it funny that they post UK photos and ask the reader to mentally picture the wheel on the other side. Can't you just get Canadian pics?
ECHOKnight2000 07-01-2008, 09:04 PM ^^^^Canada is way too far and exotic and its expensive:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Just kid.
TRD-MX83 07-01-2008, 10:00 PM Sweet! finally! =)
now give me the HSD too! =)
ok.. I'll settle for that start/stop engine too...=)
EvoFire 07-02-2008, 06:30 AM wow took you guys long enough LOL. We've had the 5 door since the Echo generations.
GatoradeBoy 07-02-2008, 09:53 AM hideous. The four door Yaris is ok, even cool(ish) looking. the other two... :barf:..barf
Camread 07-02-2008, 10:11 AM the 5-door look so much better. i think they're really trying to go after the new Fit. i hope they offer an xrs version soon....

CarShark 07-02-2008, 10:17 AM I never understood why they gave youthful adventurous Scion the 5-door subcompact and gave solid, conservative Toyota the 3-door. It seemed backwards.
Jegan_V 07-02-2008, 12:47 PM I don't know why Toyota USA didn't release it sooner since they're not at all different other than one has 2 big doors and the other 4 smaller doors. The 5-door is also far more better equipped, its got whatever a 3-door LE has. As a Fit competitor, the Yaris is great since it is the more economical of the two but doesn't lose much of the city car fun, Honda has the slight edge on fun and interior just not the price and fuel economy. The 5-door Yaris is one of my favourite cars to drive at work, no doubt about it.
blacken 07-02-2008, 02:02 PM i like it
it looks cool
RningOnFumes 07-02-2008, 02:04 PM Jeagan, if you noticed, the xA was the small 5 door hatch for all of toyota US market.. If they released it here in the US, the 5 door Yaris would be a direct competitor for the xA. Now that the xA has been upgraded to the bigger xD, there is room for a 5door Yaris Hatch.
So you say Canada has had it? AH HAH!...they don't have Scions.

I thought the xA was out by 2006 or was it still alive and well a bit after? It just seems odd to me to introduce a 5-door Yaris for 2009 when it could have been done even the beginning of this year since it seems to not directly compete with the xD.
tearin 07-02-2008, 02:58 PM It's about time! When the two variants of the Yaris 4-door and 3-door came out I was wondering why all the other countries got a 5 door hatch. Especially living in the US cars with more than 3 doors are a must. I thought it was ridiculous selling the 3-door for the U.S., but I was wrong because I see a lot of those as the effect of high gas prices.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the new xD at the LA AutoFair last November 07. It was just a matter of time.
TubRog5 07-02-2008, 08:18 PM When are they gonna get rid of that center gauge cluster? That would be the only reason why I would never own one.
ECHOKnight2000 07-02-2008, 08:44 PM I never understood why they gave youthful adventurous Scion the 5-door subcompact and gave solid, conservative Toyota the 3-door. It seemed backwards.
Actually its not backwards. Scion is Toyota's experimental brand and youth of course. Its like a test run. Hatches generally don't sell as well as sedans in the U.S. that may be changing now.

Like RningOnFumes said competition with the xA which was discontinued after the 06 model but they still had them on the lots I believe. The tC is the only officially 07 Scion model (at the time). The new xD is based on the Yaris platform. If you look at the xD you'll see Yaris like dash and features (except the center mounted gauges). The xD rides on a slightly bigger platform but not by much.

Like I said. Hatches don't sell well compared to other countries. Also my guess is Toyota positioned the hatch (the one expected to not sell as well) as the lower end of the two Yaris models. So the hatch was a base of the base model. That's probably why they didn't do that cause they didn't expect it to sell as well as the sedan which it is but I'm guessing the sedan wins in the ratio of Yarii going out but I see a good amount of hatches.
I myself am a hatch person so my next vehicle will be a hatch. The ECHO I have they didn't have a hatch at the time I bought it and that very summer they came out with the xA but it wasn't available nationwide the following year.

Yeah but marketing says 3-drs are sportier, just like 2-dr coupes are sportier.
Wolfman 07-23-2008, 06:46 PM Toyota Expands Yaris Line for 2009 with Third Model and New Safety Features
07/22/2008
July 22, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota is adding a five-door Liftback, to its popular, fuel-efficient Yaris subcompact model line for 2009.
The versatile new five-door Yaris joins the three-door Liftback and four-door Sedan, making Yaris the only model line in its segment to offer a full complement of three body styles. Toyota projects 130,000 Yaris sales for calendar year 2009, with the new five-door accounting for about a third of those. Yaris five-door will begin arriving in dealerships in August.
Also new for 2009, all Yaris models feature as standard equipment an anti-lock brake system (ABS), front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear curtain side airbags. Cruise control is now available on Liftback models, and audio systems are satellite ready/capable. Yaris delivers outstanding fuel economy and for 2008 was awarded the lowest cost of ownership in its segment according to Intellichoice®.
The Toyota Yaris brings a high level of balanced value, safety and a fun-to-drive experience to the entry subcompact segment. Its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and produces 106 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 RPM. The optional four-speed automatic transmission features uphill/downhill shift logic to reduce gear "hunting" for smooth performance when driving in hills. A five-speed manual is the standard transmission.
The Yaris Sedan rides on a 100.4-inch wheelbase versus 96.9 inches for both Liftback models. The Yaris Sedan has an overall length of 169.3 inches compared to 150.6 inches for the Liftback models, and the Sedan is 2.5 inches lower than the Liftbacks, as well.
The Yaris is built around a highly rigid yet lightweight structure incorporating strategic use of high-tensile steel. Damping materials strategically located throughout the body structure reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to help give Yaris a comfortable, quiet ride. Suspension and steering are tuned to deliver responsive handling, a smooth ride and excellent maneuverability, including a remarkably tight 32.6-ft. turning radius. Both the Yaris Liftback and Sedan ride on standard P175/65 R14 tires with steel wheels and full wheel covers (Sedan and Liftback S have standard P185/60R15) and offer available newly-styled 15-inch steel or aluminum-alloy wheels.
The instrument cluster is center-mounted and high on the dash to enhance forward visibility. Generous standard convenience features on Yaris Liftback and Sedan models include air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; digital clock; a map light; intermittent windshield wipers with mist control; and dual sunvisors with vanity mirrors. All models offer 60/40 split rear seating for three with headrests in each seating position.
Sporty S models have a newly designed front and rear underbody spoiler and a new interior color scheme distinguishes Yaris Sport models for 2009. The sport-themed Liftback and Sedan S models feature color-keyed front and rear under-bumper spoilers, sporty interior trim, rear deck spoiler, fog lamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA capability, satellite ready, integrated iPod audio unit, universal mini-jack port and "S" badging. Aluminum-alloy wheels are available.
Pricing for the all-new five-door model will be announced later this month.

Funny how it is called the Yaris Liftback in the USA, but Yaris Hatchback north of the border, in Canada. Are Americans so afraid of Hatchbacks (and Station Wagons, ...)? Why not just call it a crossover?
Sorry, rant over...
RningOnFumes 07-23-2008, 08:57 PM Ya, there's still a stigma to anything related to the key words: wagon, station, hatch, lift... They are still not cool. I've made rants about wagons being called crossovers just to avoid their car being labled a wagon it's stupid.
Stupid
Stupid
Stupid.
...errr the namings and categories, not the Yaris.
Edit: Expensive Euro Luxo cars maybe able to get away with the old fashioned categories..since they are pricey
TRD-MX83 07-24-2008, 02:09 AM I want the next "station wagon" called "estate" hehe... and "saloon" for the sedans.
Yaris Saloon
vs.
Yaris Estate 3 dr.
vs.
Yaris Estate 5 dr.
I think one reason Canada doesn't have Scions is the pure pricing guidelines as well as the safety crap with the bumpers.
But more so the pure pricing, because its the only thing I can see to set Scion apart from Toy/Lex

The different bumper regulation is no longer an issue. Transport Canada has just very recently (June 2008) changed its bumper regulation so that it is now the same as the rules in the USA and Europe.
A new federal regulation took effect on June 25, 2008, that improves the design of bumpers on Canadian passenger cars by harmonizing the Canadian car test speed requirements with those already established in North American and European markets. By updating the Canadian bumper standard, the Government of Canada is ensuring that:
new internationally consistent pedestrian safety requirements can be introduced;
design and manufacturing costs can be reduced for Canadian manufacturers; and
consumers are provided with more choice while maintaining road safety.Source: http://www.tc.gc.ca/mediaroom/releases/nat/2008/08-h158e.htm
I believe that the reason the Scion brand was not introduced here (even though individual models could be imported here from the USA -- so I believe that meant that bumpers at that time already met Canadian regulations) was because Toyota did not believe that the sales from the Scion brand in Canada would be great enough to support the separate brand. It costs much less to sell those vehicles branded as Toyotas than to sell them as another brand.

This is closer to the truth....Canadian dealers do not want the expense of building new showrooms, new staffing etc so would like to brand the cars as Toyota. Toyota USA of course doesn't want that to happen as they want to keep the brands seperate. They don't want john Q Scion owner to be pissed when they see a Toyota Xb. (rightfully so) You'll see Scion in Canada sooner than later but not yet.

Scion is also supposed to be the entry level to Toyota cars, just as Toyota is the entry level to Lexus.
Toyota was seen as a boring "old-man's brand" that had nothing to attract younger buyers. Even the "sporty" models like the Corolla and Matrix XRS models would be dismissed as nothing. So, Toyota needed another way to sell Toyota vehicles that were attractive to younger buyers, but would not immediately be dismissed as another old-folk's Toyota. Scion, as another brand, was that way.
As these young people started noticing that Toyota could make nice cars attractive to younger people, Toyota could then start to introduce some "young-folks" cars into its lineup without being dismissed as another old-folks' car dressed up in a cynical attempt (that was doomed to fail) to attract younger buyers.

Yeah Genesis project which included the new (at the time) ECHO, MR2 and Celica. More so ECHO was supposed to attract young buyers but 40 year olds and women bought them (Overall). Threw Toyota off. So come 2003 Toyota does test marketing and introduces Scion to California then it spreads cause it was more popular than they projected. Anyway another reason its not in Canada is the ECHO now Yaris sold well and the Canadian population is smaller than the Californian population from last I heard. Not much justification in bringing the marketing and network to that place. But it might change. I know the Yaris in Canada is more equipped than the USDM version. ANd the current gen Yaris was first introduced outside of Japan in Canada! Before Europe! So Toyota knows Canadians are a frugal bunch but also its crucial market for that. And the U.S. is changing as well.
100$ GUY 07-27-2008, 03:05 PM Congrats to all that crave a hatchback..... and much more, a yaris.

The xA I believe rode on the same platform as the 5-door first gen Yaris. While Canadians got the ECHO hatch which was a rebadged first gen Yaris hatch we got the xA. The current gen is all new:thumbsup::cool:
